Las Vegas is home to some of the most glamorous and extravagant hotels in the world - but recently several have been hit by an outbreak of bedbugs.

The infestations were discovered as guests were bitten as they slept over the last two years. In total, seven hotels were forced to seal off the impacted rooms so specialists could fumigate mattresses and other areas to kill the colonies.

Local news outlet, 8 News Now, obtained a Southern Nevada Health District Complaint regarding one hotel and submitted a public records request which showed a further six had also experienced bedbug infestations over the last 20 months.

Millions of people flock to Las Vegas each year to shop, catch pop icons at their residency shows, gamble, party in the numerous clubs and bars, and shop. In 2021 alone, Las Vegas welcomes more than 32 million visitors.

But it appears it isn't just visitors enjoying an all-you-can-eat buffet in Las Vegas. Bed bugs have been enjoying a stay in some of the most luxurious and famous hotels along the Strip, having their own all-you-can-eat feast in the form of sleeping guests.

Bed bugs are flat and around the size of an apple seed, with the red/brown critters often living inside mattresses, seams of soft furnishings or cracks in bedframes and drawers. The insects are mainly active at night and live off a diet of blood - so sleeping hotel guests are ideal prey.

They can suck blood for up to 10 minutes before crawling away, leaving people waking up with very itchy bites. People can also be allergic to them, causing a particularly severe reaction.

The frequent turnover of guests in hotels make bedbugs a fairly routine issue as guests can unknowingly bring them into the room after picking them up in their clothing or luggage either from home or seats on public transport during their journey.

According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene: "There is little that can be done to prevent guests from bringing in bed bugs. No hotel is immune to a bed bug infestation".

In 2021, a report was published in the journal Insects which tracked bed bug treatments in hotels. It found they appeared to be climbing, rising 114 per cent between 2011 and 2016 with fears by some experts that the bed bugs are becoming resistant to some insecticides.

Seven Las Vegas Strip hotels were named by reports as having to treat bed bugs in an affected room within the last year and a half.

Circus Circus

According to a Southern Nevada Health District complaint, Circus Circus staff were notified of bed bugs in a room after a guest was bitten in January 2022. The room was inspected and bed bugs were discovered.

The room was sealed off for two weeks so treatment could take place. Last summer, in June 2022, the hotel was forced to act again after another room received a report of bed bugs from guests.

Palazzo

Reports showed a guest complained to staff at the Palazzo that they had been bitten by bed bugs during their trip in January 2022. The room was treated.

MGM Grand

January 2022 also saw bed bugs discovered in a room at the MGM Grand, which was treated. MGM International Resorts issued a statement reassuring visitors that it has comprehensive procedures in place to swiftly address such issues.

Sahara

In October 2022, a guest staying at the Sahara took matters into their own hands, literally, and squashed a bed bug they saw in their room. The room was fumigated after staff were made aware.

Caesars Palace

In a more recent case, a Southern Nevada Health District report showed a guest had been bitten during their stay in January 2023 at Caesars Palace - which is known for its regular celebrity residencies, such as Celine Dion, Elton John and Adele. The room was treated.

Tropicana

In February 2023, the Tropicana was forced to battle a bed bug infestation of its own. The hotel issued a statement saying it was highly unlikely their rooms would be affected, but if bed bugs are found the hotel always acts immediately to isolate the room and its surrounding areas for treatment.

Planet Hollywood

Planet Hollywood, soon to be host to Shania Twain during her residency, found bed bugs in their hotel just months ago back in June 2023. The room was treated to eliminate the pests.
