On a quiet evening last year, a teenage girl sat alone in a Starbucks studying. Suddenly, a random older man approached her and struck up a conversation.

Feeling that something was off, one of the baristas whipped out a cup and filled it with hot chocolate. They walked up to the girl and handed it to her, calling it "an extra hot chocolate someone forgot to pick up."

But the barista was offering more than just an extra drink — the cup contained a handwritten note that read: "Are you okay? Do you want us to intervene? If you do, take the lid off the cup."

It essentially offered a way out for the girl if she wanted to take it.

While the Corpus Christi, Texas, resident didn't end up using her escape card, the movement touched her, and she ran home afterward and shared the story with her mum, who posted it to social media while preserving her daughter's anonymity.

The post was shared again by Grown and Flown, a parental help site that offers advice to parents raising kids nearing adulthood.

"How grateful I am for people who look out for other people!" the post reads. "Side note: She felt safe and did not remove the lid, but let them know. She said the whole team was watching over her the rest of the time she was there."

"It made me feel so grateful that the Starbucks employees were watching out for her," she told TODAY Food "As a mum, that is my worst fear that something would happen to my child and nobody would be there to help."

The story went viral over the past year, with several people sharing it and resharing it, praising the barista for what she did.

James Herring, CEO of UK-based PR firm Taylor Herring, tweeted the image with the caption: "Kudos to the Starbucks' barista who checked in on a teenage girl by writing a discreet message on her cup."

Several users of the popular platform, which has recently been rebranded as X, flocked to they comments to agree with Herring.

"Agreed Kudos to the Starbucks staff that's a brilliant gesture," wrote user @BearTaff. "All credit to the staff. What a dreadful state this country is now in," added @Wishfullthinki9.

On Grown and Flown's Instagram, however, the comments were not as positive.

"How sad a man can’t go up and talk to a lady anymore…. Sounds like a liberal wrote that on the cup…. oh yea it is Starbucks so most likely … pathetic," wrote @mr.pando728. "It’s a bit sad when someone is being friendly and it raises red flags. But that’s the world we live in it seems," @terryjoe64.

@elizscarbs rebutted those comments, however, and wrote: "Seeing the comments by the men whining about not being able to talk to young females and saying it’s just being friendly. Why her? Were there no other people in the store that can be approached? We don’t know the conversation that was had but perhaps it was enough that someone felt the want to intervene. Men need to stop approaching young women for idle chit chat, you caused this issue by being creepy and hitting on them, stop defending other men for doing it. My gosh can’t you police yourselves."
