Mount poor, Maddison and Tonali shine - Every new signing graded after debuts

It was a weekend full of new starts in the Premier League.
It was a weekend full of new starts in the Premier League.

There were no shortage of new faces on the opening weekend of the Premier League - some of whom we knew, some we didn't.

The big clubs showed off their new arrivals, several starting and quickly making an impact, others looking like they may need a bit more time to settle. Axel Disasi was quick to make his mark at Chelsea, Sandro Tonali and James Maddison were similar stories at Newcastle and Spurs respectively, whilst Mason Mount can't have enjoyed a difficult opener at Manchester United.

Some of the clubs who are expected to struggle have gone for unproven talent as they look to unearth gems that can lead them to safety; we'll be able to better assess those as the season goes on, but a couple showed undoubted promise early doors.

We've graded each and every debutant from the opening weekend's round of fixtures - take a look...

Burnley 0-3 Man City

The England Under-21 hero and £19million Burnley purchase was picking the ball out of his net within five minutes against his old side, but neither of the three goals were his fault. Made a huge save in the first-half.

Jordan Beyer C

Any defence will struggle to cope with Erling Haaland and co, but the new arrival - on loan during last season's Championship triumph - will be assessed more fairly as the season goes on when he's not up against the division's most brutally efficient No.9.

Sander Berge B-

Will be a calming influence as the season goes on but, on his first outing, possibly had the toughest assignment he'll have all season. Still, you could see why Vincent Kompany wants him in his midfield and why it's such a surprise Sheffield United let him go.

Dara O'Shea C-

Had a difficult start against City's star-studded frontline but grew into things in the second-half.

Mateo Kovacic B+

Introduced early on due to Kevin De Bruyne's injury and looked immediately at home in the City midfield alongside Rodri. More dynamic than the Spaniard, Kovacic was happy to travel with the ball and already looks to be an asset that will only get better.

Josko Gvardiol C

The big money arrival started on the bench and only got 11 minutes towards the end. Was hardly tested in the back four, but did help the team preserve their clean sheet.

Arsenal 2-1 Nottingham Forest

Jurrien Timber B-

His outing was cut short by a knee injury that will now sideline him for several months in what is a major blow to the Gunners. Timber started at left-back to further underline his versatility, but was unable to make much of an impression before he was hauled off, however it was notable how happy he was to come into midfield and take the ball in tight areas.

Declan Rice B+

As expected, was a commanding influence when Arsenal were out of possession as he sat deep in midfield. Not overly influential in the final third but that is likely to come with time and he could've opened his account with a long range effort if it hadn't been for the goalkeeper and the post.

Kai Havertz C

Still getting accustomed to Arsenal's attacking patterns and it showed whilst the debate over his best position is set to begin with the German adopting a deeper role than he had in the Community Shield when he was the attacking focal point. Does a midfield with both he and Martin Odegaard open Arsenal up too much? Had a late chance that would've made the game safe but wasn't able to capitalise.

Matt Turner C

Rare that someone leaves a club and then finds themselves playing against them so soon. The American saw two former team-mates fire past him and was kept relatively busy by an Arsenal team that dominated for long periods. Had to remain sharp and made some good saves to keep his side in it. Until the transfer window closes, we won't know if he'll be Forest's No.1 for the duration.

Anthony Elanga B

The former Manchester United man made a real impact with his speed and desire to travel with the ball and ask questions of Arsenal's defence after he came on. Produced an excellent assist to get his side back into the game.

Sheffield Utd 0-1 Crystal Palace

Benie Traore B-

Received a standing ovation when he came off but remains a raw talent. Gave away some needless fouls but was a willing runner and attempted to take on the Palace backline, but without much success.

Yasser Larouci C

Introduced with 10 minutes remaining and could never make enough of an impact.

Anis Ben Slimane C

Similar to his team-mate, wasn't able to make inroads due to his late introduction.

Jefferson Lerma B+

The midfielder allowed the Eagles to largely dominate the game against the Premier League new boys. Began the move that saw Odsonne Edouard fire home the game's winner and was very, very good throughout. On a free transfer, he already looks a shrewd bit of business.

Bournemouth 1-1 West Ham

Max Aarons B+

Immediately looked at home down the flanks and was a threat, as expected, whenever going forward.

Milos Kerkez B

Was solid defensively but doesn't mind a charge down field. Blessed with great pace, he struck up a good connection with Kluivert when he came on.

Justin Kluivert B-

Introduced too late to make any major impact on his debut, but immediately looked more of a threat than Anthony, the man he replaced.

Brighton 4-1 Luton

Mahmoud Dahoud B

Still getting to grips with the speed of the game in the Premier League but plenty of reasons to be optimistic. Whipped in an excellent ball that Solly March headed over.

James Milner B+

Playing in his 22nd season of the Premier League, equalling Ryan Giggs' record. His experience at right-back was clear to see and he came off to a standing ovation. Will be a calming influence on Brighton.

Joao Pedro B

A scorer on his debut as he quickly set about justifying his fee. His spot kick came after he'd missed a golden chance, which would've played on his mind had he not atoned for it later, but his overall play was very good.

Issa Kaboure C

The Hatters did little attacking as they were second best for much of the game at the Amex, which limited Kaboure's influence.

Mads Andersen D

His team shipped four goals on what was a rude awakening to life in the Premier League. Luton were regularly cut apart by the Seagulls.

Tahith Chong B-

The summer arrival was among those trying to stifle Brighton's midfielder but they were outplayed throughout, which also meant he couldn't make an impact in the attacking third. Likes to pick up the ball and drive from deep, he didn't quite get that opportunity here.

Everton 0-1 Fulham

Ashley Young B-

A willing runner up and down the left who is still capable of putting in a quality delivery. Had Everton been more potent in front of goal he could well have bagged an assist.

Arnaut Danjuma C-

Brought on for the final 20 minutes but unable to make an impact.

Raul Jimenez B-

Signed as a possible replacement for Aleksandar Mitrović, who could yet head for Saudi Arabia. Struggled to make a regular impact in the final third, but was only denied a debut strike by the post.

Newcastle 5-1 Aston Villa

Sandro Tonali A

Had the dream debut as he opened the scoring after perfectly timing his run into the box from his deep-lying midfield role. Controlled the tempo well and conducted proceedings with the Newcastle fan already adoring their new Italian. Given the price Chelsea have just paid for Moises Caicedo, the Toon look like they've got a bargain.

Harvey Barnes B+

Only got just over 20 minutes having replaced Anthony Gordon but, like Tonali, also managed to mark his first outing with a goal. A very smart footballer, his movement and smart finish underlined the quality he'll bring, while he also put one on a plate for Callum Wilson.

Moussa Diaby B

Took his goal beautifully to draw Villa level early in the first-half but that was as good as it got. His team's brightest spark, he was busy and troubled Newcastle whenever he got the ball, in a game in which the Villans were completely overpowered.

Pau Torres E

Came on much earlier than planned as Tyrone Mings was forced off in the first-half. Regularly caught out as Newcastle quickly transitioned from defence to attack and may need some time to adapt to the speed of English football.

Youri Tielemans D

Introduced in the second-half but was over ran in midfield as Villa struggled to get a foothold in the game.

Brentford 2-2 Tottenham

Nathan Collins B-

The defender looked at ease in a back three with his passing range certainly a plus. Did cop some criticism for reacting slowly and failing to close down Emerson Royal, who bagged Tottenham's equaliser late in the first-half.

James Maddison A-

Already he's stamped himself out as Tottenham's creative force. With the like of Yves Bissouma behind him Maddison was able to get on the ball in tight areas and connect play, which will create plenty of chances for his team-mates as they look to add goals. Started with two assists.

Micky van de Ven B

The young defender looks like he'll quickly adapt to the Premier League. Unlucky to see one of Brentford's goals cannon off him but was composed with the ball at his feet, which will be crucial as Ange Postecoglou continues to embed his philosophy.

Guglielmo Vicario C-

The man tasked with replacing Hugo Lloris didn't ooze confidence on his debut. Vicario couldn't be held responsible for either of Brentford's goals but was occasionally rash and erratic coming out of his goal.

Chelsea 1-1 Liverpool

Robert Sanchez C

Likely to be Chelsea's new No.1 going forward, but the ex-Brighton man did little to inspire. Can be forgiven for conceding Luis Diaz's opener and wasn't overly busy following that. Distribution left a lot of room for improvement, one slack pass late on gave away possession and almost cost his side.

Axel Disasi A-

A goal on a defender's first outing is not something you expect, but the Frenchman was the quickest to react as he bagged Chelsea's leveller. Playing in a new look back three Disasi held his own as the Blues weathered a storm, freeing Reece James to make an impact down the right.

Nicolas Jackson B-

A willing runner, full of pace, some impressive movement, but ultimately strikers have to put the ball in the net. He'd have had a cracking debut had he scored, but spurned several chances. Some of them can be forgiven, but an effort was ballooned over the bar when he should've at least bothered Alisson, if not scored himself.

Alexis Mac Allister B-

Played an excellent ball to begin the passage of play that led to Liverpool's opening goal. His vision and distribution were on show as the Argentine played deeper than we would usually see. Out of possession though he did leave holes behind him, albeit it didn't cost Liverpool on the day.

Dominik Szoboszlai B

The more impressive of the two new midfielders in Red, perhaps because he was given license to do what he does best. Szoboszlai played in a more advanced role and showed some classy touches, especially when Liverpool were on top. One mazy run stands out, only for Diogo Jota to steal his thunder as the pair clashed over a shooting attempt.

Man Utd 1-0 Wolves

Andre Onana B

Is lucky his Premier League debut didn't end with him conceding a stoppage time penalty. The goalkeeper was certainly kept busy by an impressive Wolves side at Old Trafford, making a host of saves. He looked assured at the back but these erratic moments that have been discussed were immediately evident was he rushed out and clattered into his opponent with the clock beyond the 90 minutes. VAR look like they've already accepted their blunder, but Onana will be grateful for the clean sheet.

Mason Mount D-

Offered little as his United side were over ran in midfield by a team tipped for the drop after a difficult pre-season. Mount struggled to show much creativity on what was an off night for the Red Devils. Defensively there were also questions as Casemiro was left exposed, which later saw Mount hauled off midway through the second-half as Erik ten Hag sought a more solid foundation. Can he and Bruno Fernandes both operate in a central trio together? Or will one have to be pushed out wide?
