Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen were once two of the most famous child stars on the planet. Their acting career began when they were just nine months old, when they starred in sitcom Full House, both playing Michelle Tanner.

Aged just six, the twins started starring in multiple films including New York Minute, Two of a Kind, Passport To Paris, and Switching Goals. In 2007, Forbes ranked them as the eleventh-richest women in entertainment, with an estimated net worth of £72 million.

The twins were already reported to be addicted to coffee aged just ten, and it seemed the pressure of the spotlight was having a detrimental effect. They were pictured smoking and drinking heavily, being reportedly carried out of Oasis’s dressing room after one too many, and almost throwing up on Penelope Cruz at Naomi Campbell’s 35th birthday bash.

In 2012, they announced they were retiring from acting to focus on their fashion label, The Row, and they also run clothing lines Elizabeth and James, Olsenboye, and StyleMint. The now 37-year-old twin sisters stay off social media and are incredibly private, residing in luxurious New York townhouses and embarking on relationships with much older men, which only ended in immense heartache.

The older of the twins by two minutes, Ashley also found love with older men, dating financier Richard Sachs, who was 28 years her senior, but the relationship didn’t last. She also dated disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong in 2007 when they were spotted getting cosy in a bar.

According to the book Cycle Of Lies: The Fall of Lance Armstrong, Lance, who is 15 years older than Ashley, was encouraged to dump her to preserve his image. She was also once seen kissing actor Jared Leto in a club, and was then linked to older men including David Schulte, president of the The Row, then 44, film director Bennett Miller, then 49, and artist George Condo, then 59.

The actress-turned-fashion mogul has been linked to Still House Group artist Louis Eisner, who she has been quietly dating since 2017. In December 2022, the pair reportedly got married but kept the news quiet and a source told Page Six at the time that their party "went late with 50 people or so total". No further detail was provided as the usually secretive couple continue to keep their private life out of the public eye.

Ashley recently became a mother for the first time, welcoming her and Louis' first child called Otto and managed to keep the news under wraps. Sources told TMZ that Ashley is ecstatic over the family's newest addition.

Mary-Kate Olsen

Mary-Kate has had a publicised battle with anorexia and entered rehab as a teenager in 2004, leading to a Got Milk? advert the twins had filmed being pulled shortly afterwards. PEOPLE reported Mary-Kates' loved ones staged an intervention, and she was then committed to a treatment facility. Her publicist at the time stated she "made a very courageous, precautionary decision".

Mary-Kate was linked to Heath Ledger and was reportedly dating him when he died of a drug overdose, in 2008, at the age of 27. The housekeeper called Mary-Kate, who was in California at the time, for help when she found him. The actress sent a private security guard to the apartment, who called 911 when he got there, but tragically the actor could not be revived.

Mary-Kate then married French banker Olivier Sarkozy, brother of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy, 17 years her senior. They married in 2014 after three years of dating, in New York City - with Mary-Kate becoming step-mum to his two children, Julien, 20, and Margot, 17.

But she filed for divorce in April 2020, requesting an emergency divorce order the next day, alleging Olivier was forcing her out of their home just as the coronavirus pandemic started to take hold. In a summons and complaint filed to New York's Supreme Court on April 17, Mary-Kate wrote: "It was clear my marriage was over... the relationship has broken down irretrievably. My husband has terminated the lease on our New York City residence … without my consent."

She added: "I am petrified that my husband is trying to deprive me of the home we have lived in and if he is successful, I will not only lose my home but I risk losing my personal property as well."

The request was denied, and their divorce was finalised in January 2021 over a Zoom call with both parties and their lawyers.

As for why they split, PEOPLE Magazine reported Mary-Kate wanted to have a baby, while dad-of-two Sarkozy was less keen. A source told the publication: "A few years ago, having a baby was not a priority for [Mary-Kate]. This has changed."
