David de Gea looks likely to be reunited with Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr after Real Madrid did not consider his signing this summer.

The Spanish giants were on the lookout for a new goalkeeper after Thibaut Courtois sustained a serious knee injury on the eve of the new campaign, which is likely to rule the Belgian out for most of the season – leading to suggestions they could move for free agent De Gea.

However, the former Spain international was not under consideration in the club’s shortlist – with Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili and Yassine Bounou of Sevilla both being considered, although Real Madrid have now secured a deal for Kepa Arrizabalaga of Chelsea.

De Gea has yet to find a new club since leaving United earlier this summer – the Red Devils decided not to renew his contract, ending his remarkable 12-year stint at Old Trafford. United signed Andre Onana from Inter to replace the Spaniard as their No.1 goalkeeper.

It is understood that no Spanish clubs have been in talks with De Gea over the possibility of taking him back to La Liga, with his wage demands and form over recent years meaning that he is not a viable candidate for any club in a league where finances are pushed.

A report in Marca has outlined how De Gea is likely to end up at Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr this summer, which would see him reunited with former United teammate Ronaldo. The two played alongside each other for the 15 months the Portuguese star was at Old Trafford until last November.

It should be remembered that the Saudi Arabian transfer window remains open until 20 September – over two weeks longer than that of the major European leagues. That gives De Gea and Al-Nassr more time to finalise their plans.

The club have also signed Alex Telles from Manchester United this summer while also seeing Sadio Mane arrive from Bayern Munich, with Marcelo Brozovic joining from Inter alongside Lens midfielder Seko Fofana. Former Arsenal and Napoli goalkeeper David Ospina is the current Al-Nassr shot-stopper.

De Gea has not been capped at international level for Spain since 2020 when he dropped out of the reckoning altogether due to his style of play and form for Manchester United. He made 545 appearances for the Red Devils prior to his summer exit.
