Alan Titchmarsh is to present a heart-warming show where down-at-heel dogs get a new leash on life.

Underdog to Super Dog follows three mutts – including homeless and rescue hounds – as they have transformative training to take on extraordinary challenges such as mountain rescue. The Mirror gardening guru said the Channel Five show is close to his heart.

Alan said: “Dogs have played such an important part in my life, both as a child in Yorkshire with a corgi/cairn and border terrier cross at my heels, to bringing up my family with three yellow Labradors.” The series is now under way and will be on our screens in 2024. Viewers are told to expect touching, funny and surprising moments as the pets bone up on skills needed for important new roles while the programme illustrates the huge impact dogs can have on our lives.

Alan, 74, who is best known for hosting horticultural shows including Ground Force and Love Your Garden, is clearly in awe of the plucky pooches. He said: “Their companionship and their resourcefulness are matchless. I am looking forward hugely to watching the development of the dogs in this series as they prove their worth when given the chance to shine.”

Denise Seneviratne, Channel 5 and Paramount+ Commissioning Editor said: “The amazing, transformative stories we will show in the series are true testament to the incredible work of the dedicated trainers and experts, and the dogs themselves who work so hard towards becoming real canine heroes. Heart-warming and funny, the dogs will go on a journey of discovery - and not always the ones they had planned on! Alan Titchmarsh will bring inimitable heart to this – he is a huge dog lover, and I am delighted he is part of it.”

Titchmarsh, 74, has entered his fifth decade as a TV star and previously said he does not want to stop working because he would lose his “sense of purpose”. When asked if he had contemplated retiring, he told the Mirror: “Never. Why would I retire and have to find something to interest me and fill the day? I’ve got a sense of purpose and reason to get up in the morning, that’s the greatest gift of all. But I do consider myself very lucky to still be on the screen at my age.”

He first appeared on the TV on BBC ’s Nationwide before he went on to present BBC’s ‘Chelsea Flower Show’ in 1983 and since has fronted other series including Ground Force and Love Your Garden .
