Ex-United star's contract with club terminated after nine days in latest setback

Morgan Schneiderlin's short stint at Manchester United might not have exactly gone down in folklore with the club's fans, but that now looks nothing compared to his latest career blow.

After seven seasons at Southampton, the French midfielder was deemed a surprise signing by Louis van Gaal when he arrived for £25million back in 2015. A total of 47 club appearances in 18 months followed, and he did pick up an FA Cup final winners medal despite being an unused substitute.

But Jose Mourinho wasted little time in offloading Schneiderlin to Everton. Three and a half years at Goodison Park followed, before heading back home to sign for Nice in the summer of 2020.

But he fell out of favour with the Ligue 1 side last season, and was packed off to Australia for a loan spell with the West Sydney Wanderers. A move to Turkish side Konyaspor was supposed to revive the career of the 33-year-old, but that chapter is over after only NINE days.

The club released a statement on Thursday that read: "Professional football player Morgan Schneiderlin, whose transfer we have announced recently, conveyed to our management that he wanted to leave due to family reasons. As a result of the consultations and evaluations, our club approached Morgan Schneiderlin's request positively and terminated his contract by mutual agreement."

Where Schneiderlin now heads next remain to be seen. He is essentially a free agent again, so is not bound by the September 1 summer transfer deadline if he wants to join another club.

Despite his struggles of the past few years, Schneiderlin is till held in high regard by Southampton fans, after signing for them when they were in the Championship in 2008. The Saints were duly relegated to League One, but just three years later were back in the Premier League with the Frenchman key to their revival.

He also won 15 caps for his country, and appeared in the 2014 World Cup. He was included in the Euro 2016 squad that reached the final on home soil, before being beaten by Portugal.

That proved Schneiderlin's final involvement in the national setup though. And with his career now in the balance, the player is yet to speak out since Konyaspor released their statement.
