A holiday park in north east England provides a Center Parcs experiences for a fraction of the cost.

Families fancying a four-night summer stay at Sand Le Mere can expect to pay just £424, as opposed to an equivalent break at Center Parcs’ Sherwood Forest which would set you back £1,399. While being less than a third of the price, the East Yorkshire park still packs a punch, with its award-winning network of holiday villages set in acres of woodland. Sand Le Mere has activities galore and chalet-style accommodation.

The park is independently run and set on the coast, providing great access to a particular long and sandy beach. Nearby there are three blue flag beaches that have been recognised for their cleanliness and facilities - Scarborough's North Bay, Saltburn-by-the-Sea and Whitby.

In the local area there are a number of attractions including Bugtopia - a jungle trail filled with impressive insects from around the world - and the Jungle Zoo, which is home to owls, goats, monkeys, lemurs and lorikeets.

Hull Live’s Caroline Hemmingham chanced a stay at Sand Le Mere for a weekend getaway with the kids, saying she had briefly considered it in the past, but had been put off by some of the bad reviews about the place.

The family ended up staying in a "gold" standard caravan for just £129 for three nights. She said: “On arrival, I was instantly impressed. The site itself is really picturesque, with several pretty lakes, lots of trees and grassy areas and the rustic Tunstall beach along one side.

"We parked up at reception and collected our welcome pack with caravan keys, a site map and some leaflets about the park. While we were checking in, the kids played in a large outdoor play area by reception where there's also the indoor swimming pool, amusement arcade, a small soft play and a large bar/restaurant with outdoor seating.

"The sun was out and there was a great vibe about the place, with many families sitting outside enjoying a drink while the kids played. When we arrived at our caravan I was again impressed. I have no idea how new it was but it looked and felt really modern and had everything we needed for the weekend."

She added: “All in all, we had an absolutely brilliant family weekend away. It really did feel like a holiday even though we were so close to home – which also cut out the stress of travelling far with two young children," she added.

As you might expect from a holiday park on the more budget end of the market, not every review of Sand Le Mere is positive. It has received a score of 3.5 out of five on Tripadvisor.

One of the bad reviews claims that the caravan they stayed in "was dirty" and that "the beds give us backache, worst night sleeps ever". They went on to complain that the arcade was expensive and small and that the shop on-site was "useless".

Many others had more positive experiences. One guest Nicola S said: "Great place for families” while another guest, Becs, said: "We paid £139 for Friday-Monday and it was well worth the money, our caravan was lovely and modern, clean and well-equipped. Just a couple of minutes’ walk to the bar/restaurant/pool.”

Another five-star reviewer, Wavey55, titled his post “a great little find” and wrote in praise of the “compact site with everything in close walking distance”, the “decent sized” swimming pool and the nearby “golden, sandy and quiet” beach.
