Russell Brand reflects on doomed first marriage to ex-wife Katy Perry
Russell Brand has been reflecting on his marriage to Katy Perry, which happened after a whirlwind romance and ended in shockingly brutal fashion.
The 48-year-old comedian tied-the-knot with 38-year-old Katy in 2010 – getting engaged in 2009 after just three months of dating – but the marriage was over and a divorce was finalised within 14 months. Their high-profile romance drew huge attention and fans were shocked when the marriage collapsed just a year after the couple swapped vows at a lavish Hindu ceremony in India.
Russell is now married to author and illustrator Laura Gallacher – with the pair tying-the-knot in 2017 and later welcoming two children together. Katy has since found love with actor Orlando Bloom who she has dated since 2016, the pair have been engaged since Valentine’s Day 2019, and together they welcomed a daughter named Daisy in August 2020.
But the former Big Brother's Big Mouth host has been casting his mind back to his first marriage. Opening up during an episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge, Russell said: “Some aspects of it were like amazing. She's an amazing person, and it was kind of incredible to live for a moment in that eye of the cyclone-type aspect of fame.
Russell Brand has been casting his mind back to his married days with ex-wife Katy Perry (AFP)“Aside from my sort of feelings of affection for Katy, it's a time that I remember being a little bit chaotic and a bit, for me, to speak for myself, a little disconnected.” Russell also addressed his first marriage during a recent Q&A session with fans via TikTok where he again praised his former wife. He said: “I really tried in that relationship. I have nothing but positive feelings for her.”

While Russell is looking back on his first marriage with rose tinted glasses, he was slammed in the past for the cruel way that he brought the relationship to an end. The marriage lasted from 23 October 2010 until 2011 – when the British comedian decided to dump his wife out of the blue.

She was due to perform on stage in Sao Paulo but was blindsided by her relationship crumbling and was unable to move while left heartbroken and in tears.
Her team, who did not realise she had been brutally dumped, coaxed the singer into getting ready to perform. The cameras again followed her as she was in costume, but the star collapsed backstage as she continued to cry. She then forced on a smile a mere second before she was elevated to the stage where she then performed to her biggest audience to date at that time. After the heartbreaking scenes, the singer addressed the end of her marriage in the documentary.
She said: "I’m a romantic and I kind of believe in this fairy tale. I think in some ways that has always been to my advantage because if you can believe in something great, I think you can achieve something great.
"I have that same belief system for everything - from career to my personal life. And I will do everything it takes to not fail. And I did everything it took, but it still failed. The bad that comes along with the good is a journey. And I learned so much from that journey."
Three months after the Sao Paulo gig, Russell then texted Katy to demand a divorce – and she says she hasn't spoken to him since.
She told Vogue in 2013: "He's a very smart man, and I was in love with him when I married him. Let's just say I haven't heard from him since he texted me saying he was divorcing me December 31, 2011."
