Tyson Fury's demons, 'crazy' family and home life featured in new Netflix show

Tyson and Paris Fury are sitting side by side on a velvet banquette in a fancy restaurant in Cannes when the boxer springs the latest in a very, very long line of surprises on his wife of 15 years.

A cheesecake arrives with a little firework that rains sparks over the table. As Paris notices a proposal written in chocolate sauce on the plate, Tyson produces a diamond the size of a cough sweet, and asks: “Will you marry me for the third time?”

After she says, “Yes!”, her husband promises Paris “a Christmas winter wonderland wedding”. The scene is captured in a new, nine-part, fly-on-the wall series At Home With The Furys, which lands on Netflix on August 16.

It follows the family as WBC Heavyweight Champion of the World Tyson retires from boxing – again – to concentrate on family life with Paris, their six kids and the dog at their mansion in Morecambe, Lancs, where we see him gardening, doing the school run, picking up dog poo, and struggling with his old demons.

His proposal in France showed Fury high on life, on top of the world. But he is never far from a plunge. His mental health struggles are well-documented. After beating Wladimir Klitschko in 2015 to hold his heavyweight titles, the 6ft 9in Gypsy King crashed and burned.

There was alcohol and drug abuse. He binged his way to 30 stone and had suicidal thoughts, almost driving his Ferrari into a bridge. But he turned his life around to claim the heavyweight crown again in 2022. Now he is trying retirement again, followed by a documentary team. Was it wise?

He says: “Fourteen years of boxing is the only thing that has given me purpose. Now it’s time to retire. What that looks like I’ve no idea.” It isn’t long until we find out. In one scene, he says: “I just don’t know if I can do this. I’d rather get punched to f*** by 10 heavyweight champions than stay home for a week with all these jobs. It’s hard work.”

As Fury, 34, battles to find a purpose, Paris, 33, and his dad, John, 59, fret. John says: “You can have everything going for you, all the fame and fortune, all the glitter the world’s got to offer, but when mental health kicks in you’ve got nothing. I’ve had it all me life, me father had it, me grandfather had it.”

Tyson is soon retreating from family life, hiding in his dressing room cupboard, packing for a meet-and-greet tour in the Isle of Man instead of watching his son Adonis open his birthday presents downstairs. He abandons youngest daughter Athena’s christening, dismissing it as “Paris’s Instagram christening”. He says: “I would’ve had a good old-fashioned shindig. A few sandwiches, sausage rolls, a few pints and a song.”

But it is obvious it is more than that. He says: “I’ve had a lot of dark moments, thinking, ‘You’re going to end up in a padded room, you’ve lost your mind, you’re crazy’. The minute I stop exercising I go straight back to the Hotel California. You can check out any time you want, but you can never leave. That’s mental health, it’s not if you get unwell again, it’s when.”

The cameras keep rolling as he impulsively jumps on a plane to Iceland to challenge Thor Bjornsson, who played “The Mountain” in Game of Thrones, to an exhibition match. He bellows: “Has anyone seen a 6ft 9 Viking wearing a pink tutu? I’m going to break his jaw.” No-one has – because Thor is in Rome. The disappointment sinks Tyson into a low. Paris says: “Tyson has ADHD, bipolar, depression.” As his mood flips again, he tells Paris: “I need to buy a private jet.” She tells him: “You’ve got one.”

But he needs another one. He tells her: “I might buy Blackpool Airport. You’re a lucky lady to have a bipolar person like me in your life.” She says: “Oh, I am. God looked down at me and said, ‘You need a challenge’.” She is the one keeping the marriage steady through all the storms of his mood swings and disappearing acts.

Family life is affectionate mayhem with their three girls, Venezuela, 13, Valencia, four, and Athena, one, and the boys, Prince, 10, Tyson Jr, five, and three-year-old Adonis. Tyson says: “Three girls, three boys, all f***ing crazy just like me.” As he booms “Welcome to the family”, Adonis gives viewers the finger. It is a fascinating look at an extraordinary family trying to live an ordinary life.

While Tyson is arranging to fly to Pompeii on a whim, Paris is chopping spuds for tea, trying to keep it real despite the reproduction of Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel fresco on one of the ceilings, and the his and hers thrones. She’s the world champion when it comes to “rolling with it”.

With child No7 on the way, Tyson says: “Our marriage is built on more than, ‘Oh, my wife looks hot today’. It is built on loyalty and respect.”

Molly-Mae and Tommy

At Home With The Furys also features a six-months pregnant Molly-Mae Hague and Tyson’s boxer half-brother Tommy, who are preparing for the birth of baby Bambi who arrived in January this year.

The couple, lovestruck on Love Island, are seen breaking the news of the pregnancy to a thrilled Tyson and Paris.

“To join the Fury family is intimidating,” says an impressed Paris. “There are 6ft 9in giants walking around!’

And it’s a clash of backgrounds. “Obviously it would have been ideal to have a boy to take to the gym,” Tommy says.

“Whaaaat?! What’s not ideal about a girl?’ Molly-Mae splutters. They’re not not ideal,’” he replies, digging furiously. “But I wouldn’t put them into boxing to get punched in the face for a living.” He is looking forward to the birth, and being at the business end. “I’m gonna be right there and cut the placenta,” he says.

“You’re not going to cut the placenta! You’ll cut the umbilical cord,” says Molly-Mae. Tommy, undaunted says: “I’m going to put a sachet of the umbilical cord in my wallet.”
