UFC legend Nate Diaz has slammed the new BMF champion Justin Gaethje, claiming neither he or Dustin Poirier "fit the description" for the belt.

The former lightweight title contender created the belt in 2019 for his bout with Jorge Masvidal, which ended in controversy as their Madison Square Garden headliner was stopped due to a cut. The title was then retired until last Saturday when Gaethje and Poirier, both former interim champions who are likely past their world level contender days competed at UFC 291.

Gaethje won in more decisive fashion, but Diaz felt that neither man truly made sense to be fighting for the title of the UFC's 'Baddest Mother F***er'. Masvidal was in attendance to support pal Poirier in the fight, but the California native was not in Salt Lake City after leaving the promotion last year.

"Him and Poirier are dorks," Diaz told Mirror Fighting ahead of his boxing debut against Jake Paul this weekend. "They don’t fit the description anyway, Masvidal, too. The champions are all kind of lame right now. There is Adesanya and Jon Jones, besides that there is nobody that entertaining to watch. So, what happens? I make something to entertain people and I’m not even in there?

“They just needed something to do, something to make some promotion out of it. That’s why I had to get out of the organisation the whole time anyway. I was doing all the promoting and bringing the attention, well I may as well be doing this out on my own. I thought about it years ago.

"They got a whole belt made and all the guys that are wearing the belt are the guys who criticised it at the time and now they're running around. They're all dorks.”

Diaz was with the UFC for well over a decade before deciding last year that he wouldn't be renewing his contract and opting to pursue boxing. But he has intimated that he would be interested in a comeback if there are 'cool' fights for him in the future - including a potential trilogy with Conor McGregor.

"There's nobody to fight," he explained. "When I fought Conor and I didn't fight for three years it wasn't because I was sitting there waiting Conor. They were like 'he's waiting for Conor'. I ain't waiting for Conor, I was waiting for something cool. Nobody was on a level, someone worth fighting.

"Then when I finally came back Masvidal had knocked out Ben Askren with a knee and I was like 'that was cool', that was the only cool thing that happened while I was gone. "So what happened next? I had to come back, they had to make a belt [the BMF title which was put on the line exclusively for their bout at the time] and I had to fight Masvidal.

"Then there was nothing cool since then too, who'd I fight after Masvidal? Leon Edwards? I fought him and now he's the champion. I fought Pettis, Masvidal and Leon," he continued. "And Pettis had knocked out [Stephen] Thompson, there ain't nothing s*** going on cool. Then Jake Paul came out talking a bunch of s*** and I was like 'oh there's something cool to do'.

Why not do the tightest s*** if you're going to do something? All these fighters don't know what's going on because they're not real fighters, they don't know what's tight. They don't know what's good entertainment, what they want to watch. I want to see a good fight, people who you want to see fight. Not a bunch of dorks fight."
