Rishi Sunak is jetting off to his California hideaway today and plans to visit Disneyland on his summer break.

The mega-rich Prime Minister and wife Akshata Murty own a luxury holiday home on America’s West Coast. It had been thought the PM would take a break in Europe but he has opted to fly to the US instead.

Mr Sunak told LBC: “I’m actually going off on holiday this afternoon, the country will be left in the capable hands of the Deputy Prime Minister (Oliver Dowden). So we're having our first proper family summer holiday in, I think, a few years for sure, which I'm very much looking forward to, spending time with my kids."

He added: “We are going to California, which is where I met my wife. The kids are very excited because I’m taking them to Disneyland.” His two daughters Krishna, 12, and Anoushka, 10, have "sadly grown out of all the princesses", he said.

But Star Wars fan Mr Sunak gushed that he was "very excited about" visiting the Galaxy’s Edge attraction at the resort. "They rather fear that we're going to have to spend more time there than they would like, he said.

The theme park offers the 'Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run', allowing people to pilot the iconic spaceship, and a ride called 'Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance'.

Mr Sunak met his wife while studying in Stanford University in California and the couple lived in the US for several years. He came under fire when it emerged he held a US green card - allowing permanent residence in that country - while he was Chancellor. He returned it in October 2021 ahead of his first trip there as a Government minister, his spokeswoman said last year.

Mr Sunak will continue to receive "daily updates" on his break but his deputy, Mr Dowden, will be at the "helm" for just over a week, the PM's press secretary said on Monday.

She said it will be Mr Sunak's first holiday with family since he was appointed Chief Secretary to the Treasury by Boris Johnson in July 2019.

His holiday after he lost out to Liz Truss in the Tory leadership race last summer was cut short. His press secretary said: "He was on a Spanish island for all of about 15 hours and then came back due to the Queen's passing".

Meanwhile, Labour leader Keir Starmer, who visited Mallorca last summer, is also expected to begin his staycation in the UK this week.
