Moscow hit by fresh drone strike on skyscraper - and Russia blames Ukraine
Moscow has been hit by fresh drone strikes overnight, attacking the same skyscraper for the second time in two days — with Russia blaming Ukraine.
The huge overnight explosion ripped into the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, on the 21st floor of the Moscow City IQ Quarter high-rise tower, said reports. The capital's Mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, said several drones were shot down overnight but one escaped defences and "flew into the same tower at the Moskva City complex" that was targeted on Sunday.
The glass facade of the 50-storey IQ Quarter Tower was reportedly damaged "over 150 square metres", but no injuries have been reported. Two more Ukrainian drones were shot down by anti-aircraft systems elsewhere in the Moscow region, Russia's defence ministry said, claiming to have thwarted a Ukrainian "terrorist attack".
The Defence Ministry said: "Two Ukrainian UAVs were destroyed in the air by air defence systems over the territory of Odintsovo and Naro-Fominsk districts of Moscow region. Another drone was suppressed by electronic warfare and, having lost control, crashed on the territory of the Moscow City non-residential building complex."
A recent Ukrainian counteroffensive, deploying weaponry supplied by Kyiv's Western allies and aimed at driving Russian forces out of occupied areas, intensified last week. At the same time, Ukraine has reportedly sought to take the war deep into Russia. While not claiming responsibility for any specific incidents, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said attacks on Russian territory are an "inevitable, natural and absolutely fair process."
Russian model killed after calling Putin a 'psychopath' was strangled by her exUkrainian drone attacks on Russia and Moscow-annexed territory, especially Crimea, have become more frequent and the office building attacked is just a few miles from the Kremlin. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said described the assault as an "act of desperation." He continued: "The Kyiv regime is in a very, very difficult situation, as the counteroffensive is not working out as planned. It’s obvious that the multibillion-dollar resources that have been transferred by NATO countries to the Kyiv regime are actually being spent inefficiently. This raises big questions in Western capitals and great discomfort among taxpayers in Western countries."
At least one person has been injured after Russian drones destroyed two floors of a college dormitory in Ukraine's second-largest city Kharkiv this morning, local officials have said. And yesterday morning, Russian missiles slammed into Ukraine and sadly cost the lives of four innocent people. In the central Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih, an apartment complex and a university building were hit by a barrage of bombs leaving many residents trapped beneath the rubble. Pictures showed black smoke billowing from corner units and burned-out or damaged cars on a tree-lined street. A 10-year-old girl was among those killed and around 53 people were wounded in the morning attack.
