Dean Henderson's expected transfer from Manchester United to Nottingham Forest has been plunged into doubt.

The England international has been expected to leave Old Trafford this summer following the arrival of Andre Onana to be the Red Devil's new No.1. Henderson knows he is unlikely to line-up between the sticks on a regular basis for United after Onana's £47million arrival.

It has been anticipated that Henderson would turn last season's loan deal at the City Ground into a permanent move this summer as he looks to continue playing in the Premier League week in week out. However, that transfer is in serious question after Forest highlighted Arsenal's back-up Matt Turner as an alternative.

There has already been contact between Forest and the Gunners regarding what it would take to pry Turner away from the Emirates.

Forest are not planning to sign both and will have to make a decision in the coming days and weeks over which 'keeper stands out for them. Any deal for Turner is not likely to be easy either, with The Athletic reporting that Arsenal and Forest are still some way off from agreeing a fee. It is also set to hinge on Arsenal bringing in a new goalkeeper themselves, with Brentford's David Raya having been targeted to challenge Aaron Ramsdale for the No.1 spot at the Emirates. Brentford want £40million for their Spanish stopper.

Steve Cooper's side have already raided United once this summer, coming away with Anthony Elanga for a fee of £15million. It was a deal that made a mark on Henderson, judging by the goalkeeper's Instagram activity.

Elanga uploaded a photo of himself signing a Forest contract, which elicited an immediate reply from Henderson, who stated: "What a club! Let’s go."

The 26-year-old is believed to have all but killed any chance he had of a long-term future at Old Trafford after a particularly explosive interview this time last year. Henderson labelled the United's treatment of him as "criminal" after he felt those running things had gone back on their word to him regarding his status as De Gea's successor.

"The conversation I had, coming out of the Euros squad was that you're coming back here to be the No.1 goalkeeper," he told talkSPORT. "I got Covid, then unfortunately no-one followed through with anything they told me.

"It's frustrating as well, because I turned so many good loans down last summer for that reason and they wouldn't let me go. To sit there and waste 12 months is criminal, really, at my age. I was fuming."
