There is zero chance of Tom Brady or Colin Kaepernick making a comeback this upcoming season, despite rumours that opportunities could present themselves.

The injury to Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow has led to speculation that they could sign a veteran quarterback on a short-term deal, but it won't be Brady or Kaepernick. Brady is seemingly retired for good, and although Kaepernick is open to an NFL return, it won't be in 2023.

Back in February, Brady decided to retire from football, although fans weren't convinced as he also confirmed in 2022 that he was finished before reversing his decision to play one final season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brady returned and completed his first career season with a negative record, although the Bucs still topped a poor NFC South division.

Brady has been linked with a comeback following uncertainty over Tua Tagovailoa's long-term health at the Miami Dolphins, and also at the Las Vegas Raiders, where the seven-time Super Bowl winner is hoping to become a minority investor. But Brady has reportedly retired for good, after agreeing a deal with FOX starting in the 2024 season.

Kaepernick, on the other hand, hasn't played since becoming a free agent in 2016, and the quarterback later filed a lawsuit against the NFL in 2017, accusing league owners of collusion to keep him out of the league. Kaepernick made a series of statements against the NFL, with his kneel during the national anthem in 2016 his most publicised as he protested against police brutality and racial inequality in the United States.

The 35-year-old has worked out with the Raiders as recently as 2022, and continues to keep himself in good shape ahead of a potential return. But a source close to the NFL told the Daily Mail that neither Kaepernick or Brady will make an unlikely comeback in 2023.

"Even with the recent injury to Joe Burrow and the likelihood of other NFL quarterbacks getting injured this season, there is no scenario, where even if and when talked about, that Colin Kaepernick and Tom Brady would come and fill those voids and sign with an NFL team this season," the source said. "Tom is retired for good, he's done and Colin, no matter how many workouts he does for teams or private workouts he does with current players, no team is signing him, and no team is signing them.

"Every team has its backups and is clearly not hoping for injury, but when and if it occurs there will be no attempt to ask either player to join their team, it is just not going to happen. GMs will look elsewhere."

Brady will make a comeback in some capacity as he will be honoured by former team New England Patriots in their first game of the 2023 season. "I invited him back to be with us at the opening game and let the fans in New England thank him." Patriots owner Robert Kraft told NFL Network.

"It will be the beginning of many celebrations to honour Tom Brady." Brady will be at Gillette Stadium on Sept. 10 as the Patriots host the Philadelphia Eagles.
