A drive-by gunman accused of murdering a 21-year-old student when he shot up the wrong house has been seized by police.

Sherlyn 'Alicia' Drew, a student at Georgia State University, died when bullets were fired at her home in Charlotte, North Carolina, US in 2021.

The innocent biology student, who had just come home from university for the summer, was at home when the bullet struck and tragically killed her.

Police have arrested 20-year-old Kymani David Bishop, who faces a murder charge, after allegedly admitting he had targeted the wrong house during a drive-by shooting.

The accused was arrested by cops after a lengthy investigation which saw the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) identify a suspect and secure arrest warrants for Bishop.

In addition, the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction's Special Operations and Intelligence Unit, the CMPD's Crime Gun Suppression Team, and officers with the Hickory Grove Division, also helped find the suspect.

The authorities said: "The suspect, Kymani David Bishop, was taken into custody without incident through the coordinated effort of the CMPD's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) and members of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office."

They added that he was "transported to the Law Enforcement Center in Uptown for an interview with homicide detectives."

They said: "At the conclusion of the interview, he was transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.

"Mr. Bishop has been charged with Murder and Discharge of a Firearm into Occupied Property."

According to Lieutenant Bryan Crum of the CMPD, the shooting was a mistake and the suspect allegedly targeted the wrong house and the wrong person.

He said: "We believe that this was a case of, you know, they made a mistake."

Lieutenant Crum added: "They targeted the wrong home.

"We don’t know who the people were looking for, but based on our investigation, it had nothing to do with Alicia and nothing to do with her family.

"So this was just clear the wrong home was struck. And that makes it all the more tragic. This case should outrage the community.”

The shooting outraged the local community as officers offered a $5,000 (£3,000) reward to help find the killer.

After more than two years without a suspect, authorities were finally able to make an arrest on February 16

Police said that the investigation is still ongoing.
