Michael Barrymore has already quietly - and seemingly successfully - begun his showbiz comeback.

The fallen TV presenter, 71, has been making appearances on stage - receiving standing ovations along the way - for weeks now.

Michael, who has given his first interview in years, is currently winning praise for directing new West End show Laurel and Chaplin.

The production tells the "true story of teenage best friends" Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin whose relationship broke down when silent movie star Chaplin found fame in Hollywood.

Speaking in a new interview, Michael credits getting sober and recovering my alcohol addiction with helping him pursue his career passions.

Discussing his new career venture with the Daily Star, Michael says "despite all the sh**ty bits that have happened in my life, I still have never lost the desire and passion for what I do" - adding how he has discovered he is "a good director".

Michael was one of the biggest names in light entertainment during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s, thanks to fronting and presenting some of Britain's most popular TV and game shows. The 71-year-old even headlined the Royal Variety Performance in 1993 and was frequently voted the UK's favourite television star throughout the peak of his popularity. However, Michael's career effectively ended after the death of Stuart Lubbock in 2001 following a party at the TV star's Essex home.

"I can’t tell you how happy I am now. I’m the busiest I’ve ever been and I’m the happiest I’ve ever been. I am probably the fittest I’ve been, too. I walk a lot, I eat well and I do what I love. I’m 71 and I feel fitter than I was when I was 40 when I was drinking and all that, " he continues when speaking with the Daily Star.

Michael received a standing ovation earlier this month for directing West End show Laurel and Chaplin - with Michael sharing a clip of the moment on his popular TikTok page. The former Celebrity Big Brother contestant has won a legion of young fans over recent years thanks to his decision to join social media platform TikTok - where he boasts over 1.7million followers.

In a clip shared to Michael's TikTok page, the former Strike It Lucky host can be heard telling a clapping crowd in a West End theatre: "I've never been so busy. I've never been so happy. I want to thank all the people on TikTok - whether you're on there or not - because over the last two years... it was time I claimed my life back. I'm happy, I'm sober and well... I don't know what to say."

"I don't think he realises how much the British public actually loves him," one fan commented underneath the star's post, with Michael replying: "I do know how much I am loved. It’s just at times, it can be so overwhelming but ohh so wonderful. I can never thank you enough; all of you X."

"Back where you belong Michael, entertaining people doing what you do best.making us laugh & smile, power to you," another TikTok user penned, as a third wrote: "I'm beyond proud of you Michael and am so happy that you are happy. I felt all emotional when you thanked you Tiktok followers."
