Coronation Street star Mollie Gallagher has been lighting up our screens playing fan favourite Nina Lucas.

First introduced in November 2019, she arrived on the cobbles as Roy Cropper's long-lost niece and they were soon united by grief with the loss of Nina's dad, who Roy discovered as his half-brother.

Mollie, 25, has been at the centre of a number of powerful storylines - including the horrific unprovoked attack on her character because of the way she looks.

In a shocking twist, Nina and boyfriend Seb Franklin were out walking when they are brutally beaten by prejudiced Corey Brent and his gang of drunken mates.

Nina and Seb were hospitalised after the hate crime and left fighting for their lives in upsetting scenes that mirror a tragic real-life attack.

Away from the Corrie set, actress Mollie looks very different to her on-screen character, who usually wears amazing gothic jewellery and black make-up.

Mollie lives in a high-rise apartment in Manchester along with her boyfriend Dan Myers, who is famous in his own right.

Rockstar Dan is in a band called Inego, whose music is described as: "Indie Rock with a splash of Disco Funk and a Pop twist".

Mollie and Dan are clearly very loved-up and have been together for around three years.

On Valentine's Day in 2021, the Corrie star posted a series of Instagram pictures with the caption: "Valentine’s Day and our anniversary all in two days. Happy one year of Mol and Dan, I love you."

Co-star Tanisha Gorey, who plays Asha on the soap, wrote: "I remember you telling me about him for the first time. So happy for you both."

Mollie has been working on Coronation Street for well over a year and has quickly become popular with viewers.

When she first secured the role, Mollie explained she was "absolutely delighted" to be working with such an esteemed cast.

"I grew up watching the show and it is surreal to be on the set working alongside such incredible actors as David Neilson and Alison King," she explained.

"Nina is a really interesting character, she is a bit of an outsider and although she is reluctant to let Roy into her life she soon realises they have more in common than she first thought."

Nina has been involved in a number of dramatic storylines, including the death of her father, moving in with long-lost uncle Roy and her romance with Asha.

But the vicious attack plot was definitely her most important yet, with Nina and boyfriend Seb attacked for being themselves in a vicious hate crime.

The storyline drew inspiration from the tragic real-life story of Sophie Lancaster, a teenager beaten to death while walking in a park with her boyfriend Robert Maltby in 2007 because of her appearance.

Sophie's mum, Sylvia Lancaster OBE, set up the Sophie Lancaster Foundation in her daughter’s memory to focus on creating respect and understanding for subcultures in our communities.

Sylvia has worked behind-the-scenes with soap writers on the plot to develop the character of Nina and to ensure the goth cafe assistant was a realistic portrayal in the build-up to the tragic scenes, which air in tonight's two episodes.

Mollie spent time speaking with Sylvia and working with the Sophie Lancaster Foundation to highlight the issue and do it justice.

"Because this stuff has happened it’s such an important story to tell. I felt a lot of emotions. I am really privileged to be given such an important storyline but I am also nervous because I want to do the story justice," said Mollie.

"I have really put my all into it and hopefully it shows. You see the human effect this has on someone who you would say is strong.

"Knowing this has happened and does happen breaks my heart."

Mollie admitted she wanted to cry as soon as she was made up to look battered by the make-up department.

She added: "I knew it would look awful but when you are sat there, it is a really strange moment. I saw myself in that way and so I held that feeling [in the scenes] which was a massive help."

On the importance of tackling this storyline, Coronation Street Producer Iain MacLeod said: "The issue of intolerance and hatred towards people from different cultures and subcultures is arguably more relevant now than it’s ever been.

"This incredibly hard-hitting storyline, which centres on a senseless act of violence, will draw in characters from all corners of our narrative universe and will, we hope, leave the audience with a clear message: everyone, regardless of how they look, how they dress or any aspect of how they live their life, should be treated with tolerance and respect.

"The story will run across the rest of the year and beyond, with many twists and turns, and will be heartbreaking and dramatic in equal measure. In the end, the story will see an optimistic outcome emerge from the traumatic attack."
