Do YOU believe in romantic love and a 'happily-ever-after'?

Dame Emma Thompson has sparked quite a debate after saying how difficult and complicated long-term relationships can be, as well as controversially labelling romance a 'myth' that can be quite 'dangerous'.

"If anyone thinks that happy ever after has a place in our lives, forget it", she told the Radio Times.

The actress, who has been married to her second husband Greg Wise for 20 years, says that people should think "sensibly" about love and how best to nurture it

She said: "'It's philosophically helpful and uplifting to remember that romantic love is a myth and quite dangerous.

"We really do have to take it with a massive pinch of salt. To think sensibly about love and the way it can grow is essential."

She added: "Long-term relationships are hugely difficult and complicated. If anyone thinks that happy ever after has a place in our lives, forget it."

Dame Emma is no stranger to heartbreak, after her high-profile relationship with first husband Sir Kenneth Branagh ran aground in the mid 90s.

The pair were married in 1989 and enjoyed a brief spell as the British acting scene's golden couple until Sir Kenneth embarked on an affair with Helena Bonham Carter, his co-star in 1994's Mary Shelley's Frankenstein.

Dame Emma is the only person in Academy Award history to win an Oscar for both acting and writing - Best Actress for James Ivory's period drama Howards End and Best Adapted Screenplay for Sense and Sensibility.

And she says she channelled her real-life heartbreak for her role in rom-com megahit Love Actually, where her character is betrayed by on-screen husband Alan Rickman.

Speaking in 2018 she said: "That scene where my character is standing by the bed crying is so well known because it's something everyone's been through."

What do YOU think? Do YOU believe in romantic love and a 'happily-ever-after'? Or is life not really like the movies?
