Tottenham have given Harry Kane an ultimatum about his future – sign a new deal or we will sell you now.

Spurs owner Joe Lewis is understood to have told chairman Daniel Levy he will not let Kane run down his contract and leave for free next summer. Sources say Lewis has told Levy to either make Kane sign a contract extension or sell him in this transfer window.

The stunning twist to the biggest transfer story of this summer has put Manchester United back on red alert while it will surely see Bayern Munich step up their efforts to lure the England captain.

Spurs are understood to be willing to pay Kane £400,000-a-week to sign a new deal, a figure United would be able to match if the asking price for him came down. United had effectively ended their interest in Kane over Tottenham ’s £110million asking price for their star striker.

With Kane having entered the final year of his contract, United consider that valuation to be wholly unreasonable and value the 29-year-old striker around £70m. United are continuing to monitor Kane’s situation, with Lewis’s ultimatum to Levy potentially driving the price down if Spurs decide they have to sell their prized asset.

Bayern are also in the hunt to sign Kane. The Bundesliga champions have had two bits already rejected – the latest around £70m plus add ons Kane is said to want to break Alan Shearer’s Premier League record of 260 goals and is on 213, with the record within his sights if he remains in England.

New Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou has remained coy regarding his star striker's situation, brushing off a bizarre incident which saw a reporter hold up a Bayern shirt with 'Kane 9' on the back. Speaking after his arrival earlier this month, the Aussie boss said he had received no guarantee that Kane would be staying.

He said: “I haven’t had any assurances and I wouldn’t expect any assurances,” said Postecoglou. “That’s just my nature. I just kind of go along and try to concentrate on the things I know right now.

“What I know right now is that Harry is part of this squad and he’s looking forward to coming back to training and being amongst these players and starting to work together.

“I don’t think it’s my role to sit down and treat people in a manner because of their circumstances. I’m really big on treating everyone the same and Harry has already entrenched himself in the history of this football club. He’s a very important part. He’s one of the premier strikers in the world and I want him involved.”
