With gritty crime thrillers and psychological dramas, comedies, documentaries and top entertainment, it looks like telly will be much brighter than the weather this summer.

There are lots of major shows returning, such as Good Omens starring Michael Sheen and David Tennant on Amazon Prime and a shake-up of prison drama Time on the BBC.

There are also tasty new shows like ITV’s The Reunion.

The Power of Parker

BBC1, Friday

This comedy is set in Manchester in 1990, starring Rosie Cavaliero, Conleth Hill, Sian Gibson and Sheila Reid.

The Winter King

ITV1, August

A bold new take on the well-loved Arthurian legends, based on Bernard Cornwell’s Warlord Chronicles series, this is set in fifth century Britain.

The series follows Arthur Pendragon (Iain De Caestecker) as he evolves from outcast to legendary warrior and leader.

Eddie Marsan plays High King Uther, while Nathaniel Martello-White is Merlin.

Painkiller

Netflix, August 10

Matthew Broderick stars in this drama about the origins of the opioid crisis in America.

It focuses on the actions of Purdue Pharma, which created OxyContin, and Richard Sackler (Broderick), the main man behind Purdue.

But as well as highlighting the actions of Purdue Pharma and doctors, the gripping show also follows those affected by the addictive painkillers.

Alison & Larry: Billericay to Barry

GOLD, August

Gavin & Stacey stars Alison Steadman and Larry Lamb reunite for a trip down memory lane on a road trip from Billericay, Essex, to Barry, South Wales.

The 210-mile journey will take in beauty spots and locations that have an intimate connection to them and the hit sitcom.

Good Omens

Amazon, July

The fantasy comedy first hit screens in 2019 starring Michael Sheen as an angel and David Tennant as a demon – an unlikely duo teaming up to try and stop the Armageddon.

Season 1 was based on Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s book, but the upcoming second series will cover uncharted territory for fans. However, no doubt it will be out-of-this-world funny again.

The show will air on BBC soon after its online debut and also stars Mad Men’s Jon Hamm as well as Nina Sosanya and Derek Jacobi.

The Reunion

ITV1, August

A high school reunion, a grisly murder, a missing girl, stunning scenery and a brooding leading man – all the elements of a top-notch thriller.

Handsome villain-for-hire Ioan Gruffudd plays author Thomas Degalais who receives an anonymous, threatening invite to a reunion at his elite French prep school on the Riviera.

Previously on ITVX, it’s a bit “I know what you did 25 summers ago”...

Fifteen-Love

Prime, on now

Former tennis prodigy Justine Pearce (Ella Lily Hyland) makes an allegation against her former coach Glenn Lapthron (Aidan Turner) five years after an injury puts a stop to her career.

It becomes his word against hers in this gripping thriller about trust, power and obsession set against the elite world of tennis.

A Good Girl's Guide to Murder

BBC Three, August

Adapted from the mystery thriller novels by Holly Jackson, this stars Emma Myers and Zain Iqbal in the leading roles.

Five years ago, schoolgirl Andie Bell was murdered by her boyfriend Sal Singh. Case closed. The police know he did it. Everyone in town knows he did it. But smart and single-minded Pip (Myers) isn’t so sure, and she’s determined to prove it.

Wolf

Obsessed with the neighbour he believes murdered his 10-year-old brother in the 90s, DI Jack Caffery (Ukweli Roach) finds himself trying to right the wrongs of others.

In an isolated house, a wealthy family find themselves the victims of a psychopath’s cruel games. When the two narratives collide, it’s a disturbing race against time.

The Confessions of Frannie Langton

ITV1, August

Set against the opulence of Georgian London, Karla-Simone Spence leads the cast as Frannie Langton, who is born into a life of slavery and is fighting to tell her own story.

The series narrates Frannie’s journey from a Jamaican plantation to the grand Mayfair mansion of celebrated scientist George Benham (Stephen Campbell Moore) and his beautiful wife, Madame Marguerite (Sophie Cookson).

Time

BBC, coming soon

The first series of Time had us all on tenterhooks, with Stephen Graham starring as a prison officer whose morals were tested and Sean Bean as a prisoner consumed by guilt.

The new series shakes up the playbook by moving the setting to an all-female jail, and features a whole host of top actresses, Bella Ramsey, left, Tamara Lawrance and Jodie Whittaker.
