Manchester United continued their 100 per cent record in pre-season with a 2-0 win against Arsenal, but former captain Harry Maguire was verbally abused by fans after the game.

United and Arsenal faced each other at the MetLife Stadium on Saturday night, with both Premier League giants embarking on a tour of the USA. A sell out crowd in East Rutherford, New Jersey, saw Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho score towards the end of the first half, and Arsenal were outclassed as they suffered their first loss of pre-season.

Both teams were heavily changed at the start of the second half, and Maguire came on for Raphael Varane before later picking up a yellow card. Maguire was all smiles as he left the field and interacted with fans, but one supporter decided to use the occasion to abuse the defender.

Maguire was called a 'm***' continuously by a fan after the game, but to his credit the England international completely ignored the remark and focused on interacting with other supporters. Maguire left the field and entered the tunnel with no match shirt on, likely giving it away to a fan as a nice gesture.

But he was disgustingly called a 'm***' multiple times by a fan, and the awful footage was caught on video. Maguire's time at United hasn't exactly gone to plan, especially after becoming the most expensive defender in world football.

Maguire showed his class as he didn't engage with the fan or react to the disrespectful remark. Maguire took to Instagram after the game, thanking the fans for their support.

"Great start to the US tour," the post read, "fans were amazing. Thank you." The defender was solid against Arsenal as he kept a clean sheet in the second half, and United are yet to concede in pre-season.

It's been a tough summer for Maguire, as he's been linked with a move away and told by manager Erik ten Hag that he would no longer be captain. Again, Maguire showed his class as he said: "He outlined his reasons to me, and whilst I’m personally extremely disappointed, I will continue to give my all every time I wear the shirt.

"So I wanted to say a massive thank you to the Manchester United fans for all their brilliant support whilst I’ve been wearing the armband. Since the day I took on the role three and half years ago it’s been a huge privilege to lead Manchester United and one of the proudest moments of my career to date.

"It’s one of the greatest honours in club football. I’ve done everything I possibly could to help United be successful - on and off the field. I will always be grateful to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for first giving me the responsibility, and I wish whoever now takes it on every success and they will have my full support. Harry."

United have beaten Leeds United, Lyon, and now Arsenal on their pre-season journey, and next face Wrexham on Tuesday night. Games against Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Lens and Athletic Club follow before their Premier League opener against Wolves.

Bizarrely, United and Arsenal took part in a penalty shootout after the game on Saturday despite the result being settled in regular time, and the Red Devils yet again got the better of their rivals as Fabio Viera missed his spot kick. Maguire decided not to take a penalty, and joked that he "Didn't want to break the camera" as the reasoning.

During the final of Euro 2020 against Italy, Maguire buried the best penalty of the shootout, and broke a camera in the top-right corner of the net. It wasn't enough for England to win though, as they suffered heartbreak at Wembley Stadium.
