Manchester United have poached Darren Fletcher's twin sons from Manchester City in a deal worth £1.25million.

Jack and Tyler Fletcher, 16, are both midfielders like their dad and will make the move across Manchester after United moved to bring the talented pair to the club where their father – now technical director – played.

United have countered suggestions the fee is a record for players of their age and fee the figure is an appropriate amount for the duo. The Red Devils have paid higher fees for players of a similar age in the past and their 16-year-old defender Harrison Parker is going the other way for a similar fee.

Striking sensation Charlie McNeill rejoined United from bitter rivals City for an initial £750,000 rising to £1.5m back in 2020. As for the Fletcher twins, dad Darren spent 12 years at United, winning five Premier League titles and one Champions League crown among a slew of honours.

The former Scotland international was appointed as the Red Devils' new technical director in March 2021 in a significant behind-the-scenes shake-up during the reign of ex-boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, an old team-mate of Fletcher's. It was also when John Murtough became United's football director in another newly-created role at Old Trafford.

Working alongside Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag since, the 80-capped midfielder - a favourite of Sir Alex Ferguson's who left during Louis van Gaal's tenure in 2015 - has now watched his sons become footballing prodigies, but they intriguingly don't represent the same nation.

When England faced Scotland in an under-16s clash earlier this year, Tyler started for the Tartan Army, while Jack was on the English bench. The latter came out on the winning side of a 3-0 victory, but now they'll be on the same team at United.

Saturday, however, also saw one familiar name depart from Old Trafford, having gone one better than his dad and appeared for United's first-team. Charlie Savage, 20, has joined Reading on a permanent basis, leaving the Red Devils just like his father, Robbie, did in 1994 after spending time in their youth setup.

Charlie wrote in an emotional farewell message: "To be one of only a few people to represent the club all the way from the Under-9s to the first team is something I will forever hold close to my heart.

"I feel like now is the perfect time for me to leave on my own accord and pursue the amazing opportunity that is in front of me. I will always support the club and will be back at Old Trafford to support the team soon. Once a red, always a red!"
