BBC Radio 1 was pulled off the air for five minutes yesterday after a major gaffe saw host Greg James fail his Giant DJ Hunt challenge.

Listeners were left in silence after 37-year-old Greg failed to catch fellow DJ Mollie King, 36, before the deadline on Friday.

This week saw BBC Radio 1 star Greg tasked with finding 30 of his fellow radio station DJs, who went into hiding for the challenge, in order for the radio schedule to be filled once again.

On Monday, Greg hosted his breakfast show as he was informed the station had been deserted. He was given a printout which read: "Greg, every Radio 1 DJ except you is in hiding. You will have no hope of finding them on your own but there are millions of Radio 1 listeners who might just stumble upon them as they go about their days.

"Greg, your job is to put the Radio 1 schedule back together, one DJ at a time."

Throughout the week and with the help of his listeners Greg had found his fellow DJs – but fell at the final hurdle when he was tasked with tracking down former The Saturdays singer Mollie King, which he had to do before 12pm in order to stop the radio from going off air.

With minutes to spare, Greg discovered Mollie had been sailing just off the Isle of Wight. Greg made a dash to another boat in a bid to catch up with Mollie – but health and safety protocols stalled his journey.

As he went to hop on a boat, he was pulled off of the boat as he fumed: "We haven't got time for a life jacket, the future of the radio station is at stake here".

"We're getting stopped by process here," he explained. "Someone's jut told me I've got sign a waiver."

He then faced delays as Greg had to wait for the form and sign it before the boat could get moving. As soon as the radio DJ signed on the dotted line the boat was off with less than four minutes to spare to search for the boat with Mollie on.

However, the delays meant he didn't catch up to Mollie in time and the station's official Twitter page announced: "BBC Radio 1 is off air."

Listeners were left in silence for five minutes, leaving Greg gutted.

As Greg returned to the radio waves, he said: "That's the challenge failed. This is mad."

Once he finally caught up with Mollie, he told the DJ: "We're too late we've broken it! We've absolutely ballsed it up more than ever."

Former The Saturdays star Mollie then spoke to listeners as she said: "I'm Mollie King, I'm a radio DJ and I hear you've been looking for me."

"You are an absolute nightmare," Greg responded.

Speaking after the drama, Greg told listeners: "I'm really in shock.

"I've done a lot of these stupid things and I am in shock and in awe of what [Mollie] has managed to pull off. I'm amazed we've managed to turn the radio station off."

The surprised star then added to Mollie: "And you were hiding on a little boat?," to which she replied: "All along, just metres from you, Greg. Just hiding on a tiny boat."
