A man has credited It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia for saving his life after its storyline revealed his own hidden health issue. The man claims he could have developed a "far more chronic illness" if he hadn't watched the sitcom's 21-minute episode 'The Gang Gets Cursed'.

In the episode, 'The Gang' believe they are all cursed and set off to undo the curse by making amends to those they've wronged. Mac, played by Rob McElhenney, shows Charlie, portrayed by Charlie Day, a monkey paw that he believes will bring him good luck. He later revealed how he got the paw from a monkey carcass rotting away in the pub that 'The Gang' owns in the neighbourhood.

But it turns out 'The Gang's' health issues - thought to be brought on by a curse - can be explained by exposure to the mould that had grown on the dead monkey carcass. Taking to Reddit, the man said: "The ending of 'The Gang Gets Cursed' saved my life by informing me about a health issue I didn't know I had.

"For weeks prior to the airing of this episode, I had been experiencing confusion, memory issues, insomnia, hallucinations, flu symptoms, and a slew of other horrible issues. I had no idea what was causing it, and my attempts to seek medical help got me nowhere.

"When the gang realised at the end of the episode that their 'curse' was caused by mould, it made me curious about the symptoms of mould exposure, as I had deep cleaned my girlfriend's apartment of a ton of mould around the same time as I started having all of these confusing symptoms."

After watching the episode, the man claims to have developed a "severe mould allergy" from cleaning out years worth of mould without wearing protective gear.

"It triggered a horrible reaction from me, and the lingering spores kept me sick for weeks," he added. "I never would have figured out what was afflicting me had it not been for this episode and could have developed a far more chronic illness. I have now moved out of that apartment and am feeling infinitely better.

"I strongly encourage anyone with unexplained illness to look into mould poisoning, and anyone dealing with mould to use proper protective gear. Thank you Sunny, I can’t imagine how much worse things might have gotten if I never saw that episode."

Commenting on his post, one user said: "Honestly undetected mould is no joke. A lot of people don't realise it's creeping within their walls but if it’s bad enough it will f*** your world up. At first you won't even realise until you start getting physically sick but it messes with your head first. Usually you'll see signs of it exteriorly but not always. Just something to keep in mind. It will wreck your pets too."

Another user added: "'The Gang Saves a Stranger' Glad you are OK." A third user said: "Sunny also saved my life. My face and lips was swollen and it was hard to talk. At night I was told I was wheezing. Turns out, I just had some bad nuts. I'll definitely switch to a different brand after these ones and the backup jug run out. Thanks Sunny, I never would have expected the delicious nuts to be the cause of my problems!!
