Why Star Wars Jedi: Survivor's six week delay is a good thing
EA has broken the news (and hearts of Star Wars fans everywhere) that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be delayed by six weeks to address bugs and stability issues, as well as putting the final polish on the game ahead of launch.
The upcoming Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has been pushed back from its original March 17, 2023 launch date, with the long-awaited Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sequel now arriving on April 28. Jedi: Survivor is also set to be one of the first games to ditch last-gen, launching exclusively on PS5 , Xbox Series X|S and PC. The news comes via a statement posted on the @EAStarWars twitter account and reels off a list of reasons for the delay, including bug fixes, stability issues, and improving the player experience.
Jedi: Fallen Order is generally considered to be one of the best Star Wars games to date, so it makes sense that the team behind the game wants that extra time to nail the experience. The statement, penned by director Stig Asmussen, stresses that the team has 'pushed themselves at every level' to deliver the Star Wars sequel that fans are expecting.
A New Hope
This delay could end up being the best thing for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. The first game – while beloved – was criticised for being buggy at launch. While scheduled have clearly overrun by the sounds of things, the gaming community is generally more receptive when it comes to delays; oftentimes because games are rushed thanks to publishers overpromising on deadlines.
A lot of fans took the news in good faith, urging Respawn to take all of the time it needs – perhaps wanting to avoid another Cyberpunk 2077 launch debacle. I fully trust the team at the studio; after all, it has an incredible track record with games like Titanfall 2 and Apex Legends.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor sequel will be the prettiest Star Wars game on consoles
Game polishing aside, the delay gives gamers a little breathing room to deal with an already-full slate of upcoming titles. March is shaping up to be a packed month even without Jedi: Survivor. Fellow soulslike game Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty launches on March 3 on PlayStation and Xbox consoles, and will be a Day One Xbox Game Pass release. And the highly anticipated remake of Resident Evil 4 is set to launch on March 24, a week after Jedi: Survivor was supposed to make its debut.
While the game delay now places the game in the comparatively quiet April, where the only real contender is Dead Island 2 (with both titles now sharing the same launch date of April 28), it does bleed into the May window which isn't exactly uneventful. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will now drop just weeks before upcoming Xbox exclusive Redfall, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on Nintendo Switch.
