Coronation Street actor Martin Hancock has teased it might not be over for his character Spider, as he confirmed his looming exit on the ITV soap which will air tonight.

Spider will depart the show in the upcoming episode after returning last year, having been offscreen for decades. The character was caught up in a shooting drama this week following a death threat.

In the fallout, viewers saw Spider and Toyah appearing to end their romance once again, as Spider was forced to choose between his job as an undercover police officer and his relationship.

Having just been offered a new job away from the street, Spider felt it was the right time to continue his work in exposing criminals. But it meant he picked the job over Toyah, calling it quits with her in emotional scenes.

After making it clear they were over and that he would be taking the new job, viewers will see Spider leave the soap on Wednesday night – 26 years after joining Corrie as the iconic character.

But it might not be over for the pair for good, and actor Martin teased he could be back in the near future. Speaking to The Mirror and other press, he said: "I don't think it's the end, I don't think it's the end of the story. These two will always have a bit of love there."

Martin went on: "I'd like to think he is leaving with unfinished business. I think there is some unfinished business... I will say no more."

On possibly returning again further down the line, he said he'd like to see the couple get married in the future. He revealed: "I think it would be nice in the future, maybe he will open up a recycling shop or something like that, and recycle things."

On what leads to the split and his exit, he said: "It's bad luck and circumstance." Discussing his time back on the show, he revealed: "It's nice coming back as an older and wiser person. I really enjoyed it for what it is. It's a great show, with great people. I really enjoyed it. There is a family feel to it. I will miss the gang."

On Spider's feelings about ending things with Toyah, he said: "I think he'll be desperately sad the way thing shave ended. Spider loves Toyah and so he is bound to feel sad.

"They both will but there's something between those two. It's a 25-year relationship. They are gonna be gutted that they couldn't make it work this time."

airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and X.
