Edwin van der Sar has confirmed he is no longer in intensive care and could leave hospital next week.

The former Manchester United keeper suffered a brain haemorrhage earlier this month. But has now offered an extremely positive update on his situation.

He posted on Twitter: “First of all, we want to thank everyone for all the great and supportive messages.

“I’m happy to share that I’m no longer in the intensive care unit. However, I’m still in hospital. I hope to go home next week and take the next step in my recovery!”

The 52-year-old suffered the issue on July 7, when news emerged he had collapsed while on holiday in Croatia. He was subsequently transferred back to the Netherlands where he had remained in intensive care.

Van der Sar’s wife, Annemarie van Kesteren had confirmed that her husband was trending in the right direction: "His situation remains the same: stable, in a non-life-threatening condition and communicative," she said.

"The Van der Sar family would like to express their deep gratitude to the University Hospital of Split for their great care during the last week.

"Edwin has to remain in the intensive care unit where he will be investigated further, and the family fervently hope he can focus on his recovery afterwards."

His former clubs have offered their well wishes, with United sending a message to the Champions League winner: "Sending all our love and strength to you, Edwin.”

Van der Sar suffered the bleed on the brain just a month after confirming he would be stepping down from his role as Ajax’s CEO. His departure came after the Dutch giants failed to secure a place in the Champions League for the first time in 14 years.

He was due to remain in situ until August 1 to help with the transition to the new appointment. "After almost eleven years on the board, I am done," Van der Sar said in a statement in May.

"We have experienced wonderful things together, but it has also been an incredibly tough period.

"I am very grateful for the people I have met and worked with during my second career at Ajax, and what we have achieved and been through together. I feel the need to take some distance, to get some rest, and to do other things.

"It doesn’t feel good to take decisions about the future of this wonderful club in the coming period. That is why I have decided to resign."
