The Sixth Commandment star Anne Reid left fans in disbelief on Monday as they discovered the legendary actress' real age.

Anne, 88, appeared on Monday's episode of Lorraine to discuss new true-crime BBC series, The Sixth Commandment, where she plays retired headmistress Ann Moore-Martin.

Peter Farquhar became a victim of his young partner Ben Field. After Farquhar died, Field moved on to his friend and neighbour Ann Moore-Martin - played by Anne - persuading her that he was in love with her despite their 50-year age gap.

The new series is written by Sarah Phelps and made in full cooperation with Peter Farquhar and Ann Moore-Martin’s families.

Discussing the true-crime BBC series on Monday, Coronation Street and Last Tango in Halifax star Anne said that she had met some of the victims' real-life family while filming.

Anne revealed that she had met Ann Moore-Martin's niece, Anne-Marie, who is played by Annabel Scholey in the BBC series, and Peter Farquhar's brother.

The actress added: "It must be weird, I don't know what I'd feel about having my relatives played by [actors]. But they seem desperate to want this story to be told. There was a documentary about it too but they want the story told too."

Also during the interview, Anne left host Lorraine Kelly in disbelief over her real age, which the host promised not to reveal live on air.

Lorraine, 63, said: "I've promised you I wouldn't say what your age is, I've promised you I'm not going to."

She added: "I promised Anne I wouldn't say her age but if you play bingo, two fat ladies - that's all I'm saying, all I'm saying!"

Taking to Twitter, viewers were also left in disbelief over Anne's real age too, claiming she is a "national treasure".

One person said: "#lorraine How lovely to have Anne Reid on your show today. She really is a national treasure. Can’t believe she’s 88. Love her."

However, some viewers thought it was unfair of Lorraine to casually give away the star's age with her bingo clue. 'Two fat ladies' is code for 88.

One person said: "Anne Reid didn’t want her age disclosing…. So why does #lorraine do ?? DISCLOSE HER AGE!!!"

While a different account added: "Lorraine: Anne doesnt want me to mention her age, but if this were bingo it'd be 2 fat ladies."
