Iconic chef Delia Smith has opened up about an "amazing" sweet treat that won her over during a trip to a fish and chip restaurant, and some foodies just can't believe their ears.

The beloved cookery writer admits she was initially "sceptical" after spotting deep-fried jam sandwiches on the menu at the renowned Eric's Fish and Chips.

Run by Chef Eric Snaith, the famed chippy, which has previously featured in The Good Food Guide, serves the quirky dish as part of its sweet treats menu, alongside a deep-fried chocolate chip cookie dessert.

Chef Eric was introduced to the legendary Delia during her visit to his branch in the historic market town of Holt, Norfolk, and suggested she give the "unique" sandwich a try for herself.

As reported by BBC News, Chef Eric came up with the idea for deep frying jam sandwiches as he wanted to whip up a nostalgic treat with "a bit of a twist".

He naturally had hoped Delia would enjoy it when he served her lunch, but could never have imagined just how impressed she would be. In fact, she was so thrilled, that she asked if she could serve it herself, at her Norwich City Football Club-based restaurant, Yellows.

Delia told the publication: "When we first saw the deep-fried jam sandwich on the menu in Eric's we were a bit sceptical, but the friends we were with ordered it and so did we. The rest is history.

"It was so amazing we cheekily asked Eric if we could serve it in Yellows Bar and Grill to bring it into the city and our customers, just like us, love it. The only way we can describe it is 'think doughnut, only even better'."

The dish is now proudly included on the main menu at Yellows, where it is referred to as "Eric's deep-fried jam sandwich", in a nod to the creative inventor.

As per the description: "Who is Eric? The very famous Eric of Fish & Chip fame who in his restaurant in Holt serves the best fish and chips ever.

"We have permission from him to use his exclusive recipe which may sound unlikely but has to be tasted to be believed. Served hot, dusted in caster sugar."

Those yet to try the sugary dessert have been left intrigued. Some are keen to give it a go, while others simply can't imagine it.

One approving social media user tweeted: "This looks absolutely delicious! It looks like a donut! Is it made out of bread or dough? I really want to try this.

Another less enthusiastic individual commented: "Not sure on this one!"

A third wrote: "My mum made us these in the seventies. She called them Jam Butty Fritters."
