Rugby league star details frightening car crash that left him "shaken up"
Matty English is ready to help kick-start Huddersfield’s season after recovering from a frightening car crash.
The England Knights prop returned to action in Saturday’s win at Super League leaders Catalans which ended a dire run of just one victory in nine games. Giants hope to build on that against improving Wakefield on Friday night in a fixture that could shake things up at the bottom of the table. But English is just glad to be back in action after his scary episode.
He recalled: “Unfortunately, I did have a car accident. It took me out of the game for a couple of weeks until medically I got all checked out and got the all-clear. I collided with a couple of vehicles on the motorway and my car was a write-off. There was no lasting damage and thankfully no one was hurt. I was just pretty shaken up for a while.
“I’m back at the wheel now and everything is sorted. I’m glad just to put it behind me. But I’d come back in the reserves against Leeds at Headingley and picked up a little hamstring issue which set me back another week. It felt like it was just one thing after another.
“I was glad to get back out there in Perpignan and get back in the mix with the boys. It was such a good feeling to get the win. And now we’re looking for another against Wakefield.”
Gay rugby league referee lifts lid on how coming out affected officiating careerEnglish missed just over a month of action so it’s little wonder he’s keen to make up for lost time against Trinity. Bottom-placed Wakefield lost all of their opening 14 games this term before finally getting off the mark against Leeds. But they have now won three of their last four matches, including beating Wigan in golden point extra-time last Friday, to offer genuine hope of avoiding relegation.
They are only two points behind Castleford and just six adrift of Huddersfield who, despite being deemed potential title challengers, have slumped to tenth. It is unlikely Giants will get dragged into the relegation mix but English conceded: “We understand where we are at. We understand we need to beat teams, especially those around us.
“It’s a massive game. Wakefield are one of the in-form teams. It’s crazy what that first win did for them and you can just see they’re playing with a lot of confidence now. We were all sat there in the team room in Perpignan watching them last week and they were good. No one expected them to beat Wigan but fair play, they did it.
“We were good, though. It was a much-needed win for us and hopefully the first of many.”
