Boy, 7, killed as man arrested for 'causing death by careless driving'

A young schoolboy was killed in a collision with a car, as investigating police made an arrest.

The seven-year-old was hit by the vehicle at around 11.10am today near the Plymstock Albion Oaks rugby club in Plymstock, Devon.

Devon and Cornwall Police have since arrested a 55-year-old man as investigations into the tragedy continue.

The road remains closed for the time being to allow officers from the Roads Policing Team to continue carrying out investigations at the scene.

A spokesman for the force said: "A seven year old boy sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital by land ambulance.

“Police have since been informed that he has sadly died. His next of kin have been informed.

"A 55 year old man from Plymouth has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. He remains in police custody at this time."

Anyone with dashcam footage or any information is asked to contact the police quoting log 331 of February 19th 2023.

The name of the young victim has not been revealed at this time.

One person said of the tragedy: “Absolutely heartbreaking, cannot imagine how the family must feel.

“Thoughts and love with all.”

Another added: “This is absolutely heartbreaking, as a parent of a seven-year–old boy I cannot even begin to imagine what the poor family are going through.

“Sending so much love. RIP little man.”

Another person said: “Oh no how awful. RIP little one.

“Love and strength to the family, friends and emergency services involved with this today.”
