Olly Murs says he turned into groomzilla ahead of wedding to bodybuilder Amelia
Olly Murs admits he has transformed into a flower obsessed groomzilla ahead of his wedding.
The pop singer, 37, will wed bodybuilder girlfriend Amelia Tank, 31, early next month after proposing last year.
And he reveals he has become so engrossed with choosing plates, flowers and chairs that he is even giving their wedding planner a run for her money.
Olly says: “I’m a groomzilla. I never expected it, I thought I’d be the opposite.
“Amelia will sit me down and go, ‘Look, we’ve decided on this’ and I’m like, ‘No, no, no. Get rid of that, change that, move that’.
'I'm spending £20k on a new bathroom - but won't help my brother out with cash'“I didn’t know I cared so much about what the flowers look like but, honest to God, if I’m reincarnated, I’m coming back as a florist.”
The Troublemaker singer admits to scrutinising every single detail of their big day, “even to the point of cutlery”.
He says: “I didn’t realise how much I would love picking what the plates are going to look like, the glasses.
“There’s a lady helping us plan the wedding and I said to her, ‘I don’t want ugly chairs, you know those horrible school chairs that are horrendous’. She said, ‘Olly, I’ve been doing this for a long time…”
But while the former X Factor star might have assumed control during the wedding planning process, he is firm that he will not be taking centre stage on the day itself – as he wants Amelia to be in the spotlight.
He reveals: “I won’t be getting up on stage [to perform], no. Amelia has to listen to me singing enough. And the wedding day is not about me, it’s about her. I want her to have the most magical day and I want all eyes to be on her.”
The couple are known for their love of practical jokes but cheeky chappy Olly – whose latest album is aptly titled Marry Me – says their nuptials will be a prank-free zone after his fiancee made her feelings clear.
He says: “Amelia said to me, ‘If you do, it will really p*** me off.’ I did suggest live-streaming the wedding at one point. But she was like, ‘No way.’”
Olly has been dating model and bodybuilding champion Amelia since 2019.
The pair met on Instagram and shared their first date at the gym. They went public with their romance on New Year’s Day 2020, when The Voice coach Olly shared a snap with fans, describing his new love as an “amazing woman”.
'My sister tried to wear a wedding dress to my engagement party - I got revenge'The smitten chart-topper says the pair are soulmates and the marriage will be for keeps, adding: “We love each other and every day I’ve been with her, we get on – as best friends and as partners.
“We’re both at a point at our lives where we’ve done our craziness and we want to have the responsibilities and family.
“I couldn’t think of a better person to do that with – so I’m in this till the end.”
And he explains it is definitely a case of “for better, for worse”. Olly says: “Amelia’s got her own job, her own career. She’s independent and she loves me for me. She doesn’t always come along to all of my showbiz events.
“She's in a different world to me but we always meet in her world and that’s where I prefer to be, because the showbiz world is not reality.
“When I’m sat at home and watching football, cooking dinner and looking like a bag of sh*t, having a bad day, getting angry, then taking the dog for a walk with Amelia and sharing intimate moments together – that’s the real me.”
After his romantic clifftop proposal during a visit to Cornwall last year, Olly hinted that they would like children. And he now confesses that he and his bride-to-be are keen to start their family as soon as possible.
He admits: “I want to get on with it. If I had been a dad 10 years ago... my career was so crazy. But now I’m in a point where I’m ready for that commitment and that responsibility.”
And Olly says he dreams of his kids one day joining him on a stage at London’s O2, where he performed in May during his arena tour.
He says: “I wanted Amelia to see me at the O2 because I didn’t know if I’d do it again. I wanted to be able to tell my kids I did it. But if I had a child in the next year, two years, who knows? They could watch me at the 02. I’d love that – it would be pretty special.”
