THE DEFIANT (5.40, nap) should know how to hold off his seven rivals in the Racing Welfare Handicap at Chelmsford on Sunday.

The Daniel Steele-trained veteran took advantage of a drop in grade when winning a nine-runner handicap at this course and distance 17 days ago.

The seven year old was also a runner-up here off the same mark last September so he can remain competitive back up in class.

In the preceding race at the Essex track, HOLY FIRE (5.05, nb) is the red-hot choice in British EBF Fillies' Handicap.

The lightly raced Charlie Fellowes trainee was a very good second of 11 in a handicap at Kempton 25 days ago.
