After an unusually warm few weeks, the British weather could be taking a turn for the worse.

Heavy rain was forecast for some parts of the UK throughout Sunday - particularly in the northwest.

A strong Atlantic breeze will be pushing rainclouds across the Hebrides on Sunday morning, according to latest weather maps.

By midday, rain would likely have fallen in most of Scotland and Northern Ireland, as well as the north of England.

Scotland, in particular, could be facing up to 3mm of rainfall per hour, with the western isles most likely to see the heaviest downpours.

Rain spells were also forecasted for regions in the south and southwest of England, however.

The rainclouds could stretch as far as central Wales, as well as North Devon, forecasted WXCharts maps.

Meanwhile, some of the heavy rain could be accompanied by major thunderstorms.

Scotland was likely to see some thunder and lightning in mid-afternoon - particularly around Glasgow and Kilmarnock, but also as far east as Aberdeen.

In terms of temperature, the UK is likely to see a milder Sunday, compared with previous weeks.

There will be highs of 21C in London at about 4pm, and lows of 6C in central Scotland in the early morning.
