Madonna may be suffering with 'sepsis' claims expert after intensive care stay
Madonna could be battling 'sepsis', ITV's resident medical expert has claimed as he responded to the news the Queen of Pop has endured a spell in ICU after fighting a 'serious' bacterial infection.
The Lorraine doctor said it was "worrying" for Madonna to be found unconscious.
Waking up to the news that has stunned fans around the world, Dr Amir Khan gave his take on the situation during an appearance on Thursday's Lorraine show.
Dr Amir explained: "It'll be worrying certainly for Madonna fans, she was found unconscious, in New York, rushed to hospital where she spent a night in ICU incubated.
"Her manager has come back and said she's been suffering from a bacterial infection. But I think, as a healthcare professional if you're in ICU and unconscious with a bacterial infection that suggests she may have been suffering from sepsis.
Baby boy has spent his life in hospital as doctors are 'scared' to discharge him"As a result, her tour, which was due to start in Vancouver, on the 15th of July has been, understandably, postponed.
"There'll be a lot of disappointed fans, but all of them will agree her health and well being is the most important thing in all for this."
The NHS describes Sepsis as a life-threatening reaction to an infection. It occurs when the immune system overreacts to an infection and starts to damage the body's own tissues and organs.
Lorraine Kelly noted Madonna's family are by her side and she's receiving "the best possible treatment".
Amir continued: "She's in the best hospital and Lourdes her daughter's been there by her side all through that time, and her family have actually said that they were preparing for the worst, which is probably why it was kept a secret.
"But, they've also said that actually this might be a wake up call to the 64-year-old pop legend because she thinks she's invincible and she could do anything and she's been pushing herself so hard for this tour for her fans."
A statement from her talent manager Guy Oseary said: "On Saturday June 24, Madonna developed a serious bacterial infection which lead to a several day stay in the ICU.
"Her health is improving, however she is still under medical care. A full recovery is expected. At this time we will need to pause all commitments, which includes the tour.
"We will share more details with you soon as we have them, including a new start date for the tour and for rescheduled shows."
The 64-year-old was scheduled to start her 'Celebration' tour on July 15.
