Most Brits will bask in temperatures of up to 33C this weekend as the country bakes in another heatwave - with the chance of mercury to 40C again.

The mercury is predicted to tip over the 30C mark once again following a tempestuous few weeks of warm weather and thunderstorms.

Warm weather will hit the South and Midlands over the weekend, experts.

The South East in particular will be extremely hot, Met Office forecasters have said, although no official weather warnings have been issued.

But for others, the forecast looks less predictable with the possibility of showers putting a dampener on the first weekend of summer.

Outbreaks of rain and possible thunder are forecast for North Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland from tomorrow, while Sunday will see the North West hit by showers.

It comes as Glastonbury revellers look set for optimum weather as around 200,000 people descend on Worthy Farm to watch the likes of Sir Elton John and Arctic Monkeys this weekend.

Festival goers were spotted taking cold showers and even cooking breakfast in the sunshine on Friday morning, the first official day of huge event.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Chris Almond said the UK was transitioning to a "more typical weather pattern" with a band of high pressure in the South resulting in glorious sunshine and warmer termperatures.

Lower pressure in the North means weather will be less consistent, Mr Almond said, with potential for thundery showers.

“Official heatwave criteria could be met for parts of southern and eastern England, with temperatures most likely to peak in the low 30s on Sunday in the southeast, but even elsewhere temperature could still reach the high 20s.

“Temperatures will likely remain quite high overnight, so it’s important to look out for those who may be more vulnerable to heat.”

It comes as experts say Britain could hit the 40C mark once again later this summer.

While it's too early to accurately predict temperatures, the Met Office's long-range forecast does anticipate "very warm or hot conditions probable at times".

Concerning the second half of the month, it said: "Heatwaves are possible, with temperatures most likely remaining well above average for the time of year.

"In this scenario, the northern parts of the UK could see increasing amounts of settled, drier weather while southern regions begin to experience a greater risk of rain, showers and thunderstorms.

"Across the UK, heatwaves are possible during July, with temperatures most likely remaining well above average for the time of year."
