A couple told how they found a man's body on the side of the road in Nottingham with blood “trailing down” the street.

Police are keeping an open mind over the motive for a knife and van attack in the city that has left three people dead.

A 31-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a deadly rampage in the city on Tuesday and detectives are not looking for anyone else in connection with the violence.

Amazon delivery driver Miklos Toldi, 47, told The Mirror how he and his wife found a man's body on the road.

He said: “I saw him lying there on his side covered in blood. We stopped the car, it was around 5.45am. Honestly my first thought was that it was an alcoholic lying in the floor.

“I just stopped because I saw the blood trails. It was quite fresh. There was blood trailing down the street. His mouth was open, there was no movement on the chest."

Miklos, who moved from Hungary to the UK more than 17 years ago, said another driver also stopped to help and the police were called.

Officers, he said, arrived on the scene outside Magdala Tennis Club in Nottingham “very fast” - in just a few minutes and started CPR.

“When they arrived they turned him onto his back and cleared away the blood," he continued.

“When they turned him over I think I saw two or three cuts around the stomach. His knuckle was covered in blood as well.

“He was about 65 with greying hair and wearing clean black working trousers and trainers. He looked like he was a construction worker."

Miklos said his wife Petra Gyuricska was shaken up by the incident.

“I’m worried about my wife. She works in a hotel and had to serve 70 people," he said. “She wife doesn’t like movies with killing or aggression."

He said their area in Mapperley Park was a “good area” but said there was a rougher area just 300 yards away.

His wife earlier said they found the body after she finished work and was picked up by her husband.

“We saw the blood and I told my husband to stop,” said Petra.

Their neighbour Bibi Gorbutt also told how she was woken up by “a horrendous bang” after 5am.

She said: “It woke me up and sounded like a bomb it really did because it was so loud. I thought ‘oh my God what’s going on?’

“Earlier at 1.30am I heard two people outside. There was a terrible argument going on and I don’t know if this was connected with this killing.“I didn’t see them but I saw some movement. I was scared they were going to hit each other.”

Nottinghamshire Police Chief Constable Kate Meynell said the force is working with counter-terrorism investigators to establish what happened.

Two people were stabbed to death in a student area of Nottingham at about 4am while the body of another victim was found in Magdala Road.

Three people were hurt, one critically, when a suspect driving a van tried to run them over near the Theatre Royal.

Chief Constable Meynell said: "This is a tragic series of events which has led to the lives of three innocent people being taken and left another member of the public in a critical condition in hospital.

"My thoughts are with all the families affected by this shocking incident and we will be working extremely hard to understand exactly what has happened."
