David Tennant has admitted his return to Doctor Who took some "wrangling" but is treating it as his "last shot".

The Scottish actor, 52, is set to reprise his role as the Doctor in a new series airing in the autumn.

He will be joined by Catherine Tate who will bring back Donna Noble in the Russell T Davies reboot as they take on more aliens.

The hotly anticipated return will make the show’s 60th anniversary.

Yet David admitted it took a tiny bit of persuasion to bring him back to his iconic role.

“But we were always receptive to the notion. Initially, it was a casual conversation going, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to do a one-off?’ Then Russell was back running the show and suddenly it could be something bigger,” he confessed to Radio Times.

"But there’s really no pressure."

David added: "It’s a victory lap, in a way – you get to enjoy something that had meant so much to you, one last shot before you get too old to do it again.”

Fans were given a glimpse into the new series just before the Eurovision Song Contest last month.

The clip showed the Doctor and Donna going on plenty more adventures together and come face to face with new aliens.

It used clips from each of the three new episodes, giving a fans a sneak preview as to what they might expect.

The titles of the three specials, which are set to air in November, were also revealed as The Star Beast, Wild Blue Yonder and The Giggle.

The episodes will also see other well-known names such as Yasmin Finney and Neil Patrick Harris join in the action.

Showrunner Russell T Davies said: "The titles are just the beginning of the Doctor’s biggest adventure yet. Autumn is coming, with three hours of danger, Donna and disaster about to be unleashed!"

After the three episodes air later this year, Ncuti Gatwa is set to take over as the 15th Doctor.

His series is due to air at the end of the year where the new Doctor will be joined by Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday.

Davies said: "If you thought the appearance of David Tennant was a shock, we’ve got plenty more surprises on the way. The path to Ncuti’s 15th Doctor is laden with mystery, horror, robots, puppets, danger and fun.

"We’re giving you a year to speculate, and then all hell lets loose."
