Bruce Willis' heartbroken family have issued a devastating update on the Hollywood star's health – revealing he has been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia.

The Die Hard actor, 67, who made his name playing action hero John McClane before appearing in cult films including Pulp Fiction, The Sixth Sense and Armageddon has been on a break from acting since March last year when his family announced he was struggling.

Bruce's daughter Rumer, who he shares with ex-wife Demi Moore, announced the tragic update in a new Instagram post this evening.

"Our family wanted to start by expressing our deepest gratitude for the incredible outpouring of love, support and wonderful stories we have all received since sharing Bruce’s original diagnosis," wrote the 34-year-old.

She added: "In the spirit of that, we wanted to give you an update about our beloved husband, father and friend since we now have a deeper understanding of what he is experiencing.

"Since we announced Bruce’s diagnosis of aphasia in spring 2022, Bruce’s condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD).

"Unfortunately, challenges with communication are just one symptom of the disease Bruce faces. While this is painful, it is a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis."

The family's statement continued on The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration's website, explaining that "FTD is a cruel disease that many of us have never heard of and can strike anyone".

"Today there are no treatments for the disease, a reality that we hope can change in the years ahead," the official statement adds. "As Bruce’s condition advances, we hope that any media attention can be focused on shining a light on this disease that needs far more awareness and research.

"Bruce always believed in using his voice in the world to help others, and to raise awareness about important issues both publicly and privately.

"We know in our hearts that – if he could today -- he would want to respond by bringing global attention and a connectedness with those who are also dealing with this debilitating disease and how it impacts so many individuals and their families."

They added: "Bruce has always found joy in life – and has helped everyone he knows to do the same. It has meant the world to see that sense of care echoed back to him and to all of us."

"We have been so moved by the love you have all shared for our dear husband, father, and friend during this difficult time. Your continued compassion, understanding, and respect will enable us to help Bruce live as full a life as possible," the family concluded.

Breaking Bad's Aaron Paul was amongst the first famous face to comment on Bruce's health update, calling the actor "a damn legend".

He wrote: "Love you so much my friend! Sending hugs to you and that beautiful family of yours. Your pops is such a damn legend."

One fan commented: "Rumer Willis, you are the daughter that every dad would want." While another said: "Big fan of your Dad. Sending positive vibes. He’s lucky that he has an amazing support system behind him."

"Please hug your dad for all of us. We just adore him and all of you," penned a third follower. "Sending you and the family love Rue!" said another. "He gave us a lifetime of entertainment," wrote someone else.

It was in November last year that close pal Sylvester Stallone revealed that Bruce was going through a "really difficult time" following his aphasia diagnosis.

Sylvester opened up about his friend's condition, admitting that he is "so sad" for his pal and his ongoing health issues.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he said: "Bruce is going through some really, really difficult times. So he’s been sort of incommunicado. That kills me. It’s so sad."

He was one of the first friends to speak publicly back in March last year when his diagnosis was first revealed to fans, wishing him well on social media.

"We go back a long way. Praying for the best for you and your wonderful family," he penned alongside a carousel of pictures of Bruce.
