Huge thunderstorm 'in blink of an eye' leaves homes 'shaking' and causes floods

A massive thunderstorm appeared in the “blink of an eye” over swathes of the country, “shaking” homes and causing floods.

After record high temperatures for the year, parts of the UK quickly found their sunny days turning around as dark clouds swept in.

In areas, this led to torrential rainfall and storms and in Manchester today that triggered flooding as well.

It was the first time the region had seen any rain in 23 days, with the Met Office issuing a spate of weather warnings across the country.

During this afternoon, Manchester was suddenly hit by the storms which led to flooding on some roads and even left some people trapped in their cars after they became submerged.

The storm was said to have come on “in the blink of an eye” and left some homes “shaking”.

Festival-goers at ParkLife saw their performances temporarily paused amid fears of lightning strikes.

People took to social media after the storm hit, The Manchester Evening News reported.

One person said: "Electrics off at the mains and house shaking from thunder. Manchester, never change".

Another person said: "I’m not far from Manchester……just jumped out of my skin at the last bit of thunder, shook the house!"

A third added: "That is some nasty thunder and lightning in Manchester right now".

Another Brit caught in the storm said: "Manchester went from hottest day of the year to thunder, lightning and rain in the blink of an eye. Meanwhile, there's an outdoor festival in progress a few miles away where people are probably sunburned and wet."

Meanwhile another person said the thunder clap “scared the s*** out of me”.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms was put in place from midday on Sunday until 9pm, covering the whole of Greater Manchester and the rest of the north west.

A new weather warning has now been issued for the start of next week too, with the possibility of heavy rain hitting Greater Manchester again on Monday.
