Man's astonishing luck as he wins £20,000 while collecting £500 scratchcard win

A lucky lottery fan who went to collect a $500 prize walked away with a second prize worth $25,000 after an astonishing run of luck.

Bradley Sprout, from Davenport, Iowa, had taken his winning scratchcard to the Hy-Vee grocery store he had bought it from to collect the modest win.

But the 51-year-old decided to invest some of the cash into more tickets and scooped a $25,000 (GBP 20,143) prize.

Factory worker Bradley explained that his win was so bafflingly lucky that even his wife Michelle refused to believe him at first.

He explained in a statement from Iowa Lottery: "I said, 'Honey!' And I showed her. And she said, 'No way!'"

Bradley added: "She didn't believe me, so I hurried up and scratched off my ticket, and the first number on there was the winner.

"She had to actually see me scratch the ticket to believe me."

Both winning tickets were purchased from the Hy-Vee grocery store at 2900 Devils Glen Road in the city of Bettendorf.

Bradley collected his winnings at the Iowa Lottery's regional office in Cedar Rapids, on June 2.

He revealed he will use the money to pay off bills.

Iowa Lottery said: "The $500,000 [GBP 402,705] CA$H game is a $50 [GBP 40] scratch game that features prizes ranging from $50 [GBP 40] up to $500,000 [GBP 402,705].

"The game features six top prizes of $500,000 [GBP 402,705], six prizes of USD 25,000 [GBP 20,143] and overall odds of 1 in 3.09."
