Manchester United misfit Wout Weghorst could enjoy a swift return to the Premier League with Everton interested in signing the striker.

The Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford in January on an initial loan deal. His arrival was intended to bolster the Red Devils’ attack following the explosive departure of Cristiano Ronaldo.

Things haven’t quite gone to plan for the Burnley man with Weghorst scoring just two goals in 31 appearances in all competitions - none of those coming in the Premier League. United did have an option to make that deal permanent but the chances of that being activated now appears remote.

According to talkSPORT, the Red Devils do not intend on offering the 30-year-old an extended stay. There remains interest in his services though.

It is reported that Everton could make a move for Weghorst’s signature as they too attempt to add to their attacking options after they narrowly stayed up. The Toffees endured their own frustrations in front of goal throughout the 2022/23 campaign.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin scored just two Premier League goals all season as he battled against persistent injury issues. Should they firm up their interest in Weghorst, Everton will have to open talks with Burnley.

The striker’s contract that he signed after joining from Wolfsburg does not expire until the summer of 2025. He is also set to hold discussions with boss Vincent Kompany following the Clarets’ return to the Premier League.

Ahead of the FA Cup final defeat to neighbours Manchester City, Weghorst admitted that his goal return had too left him disappointed. Speaking to United’s official website, he said: “I've really tried to give my all in every match I've played, in every minute I've had. It doesn’t matter which position it is. I always give my best.

“Of course, for me as a striker, only two goals is not enough. It’s not good. That's just the only thing for me that's disappointing, because I know I'm capable to do it.”

Amid Weghorst’s departure, United appear to be focusing on their efforts to sign a big-name striker in the summer transfer window. Talks have already been opened with Eintracht Frankfurt and Atalanta for Randal Kolo Muani and Rasmus Hojlund.

However, the Red Devils’ hopes of signing Tottenham ’s Harry Kane appear to have been hit with a significant blow over recent days. Real Madrid appear keen to swoop for him following the departure of Karim Benzema.

England captain Kane enjoyed another sensational campaign in North London despite Spurs’ miserable season. He scored 32 goals in all competitions and was only second to Erling Haaland in the race for the Premier League Golden Boot.
