As the weather warms up, families feeling the pinch have been given advice on the best value you can get for your barbecue.

Consumer champion Which? tested all the options for the summer treat.

In a series of blind taste tests it proved that shoppers needn’t break the bank to enjoy a tasty product.

A panel of consumers was asked to rate pork sausages from 12 sources, including Aldi, Lidl, Sainsbury’s and other supermarket options, plus branded versions such as Heck.

While Tesco Finest scooped the top spot, cheaper options from Lidl and Aldi, both £2.49 for 400g, tied for second place and received Which?’s Great Value recommendations.

Heck’s pricey bangers came last as three-quarters of the panel felt that the pork flavour was too weak, the seasoning was lacklustre and texture was too coarse.

In a blind taste test for beef burgers, 67 consumers sampled 10 premium offerings from supermarkets including Aldi, Lidl, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco, alongside branded fare from Gourmet Burger Kitchen and Heck.

Aldi’s burger was the cheapest and clinched the top spot, securing a Best Buy and Great Value recommendation. They cost £2.89 for two.

Beyond Meat triumphed among the meat-free burgers, costing £2 apiece, although the Meatless Farm option was given a Great Value endorsement and cost £3.50 for four.

For a thirst quencher, Pepsi edged rival Coca-Cola to top spot.

Aldi’s Vive Cola was the pick for bargain hunters, at 49p for two litres.

Ele Clark, Which? retail editor, said: “Shoppers will be delighted to know they don’t have to pay over the odds for great tasting burgers, sausages, veggie burgers and drinks.

“Supermarket own-label foods will not only save you money compared with the big brands but often taste better too, meaning that people can enjoy a top-notch barbecue without spending a fortune this summer.”
