An urban explorer has found a ghost town where nearby residents don't even know who lived there.

Wadsworth, Illinois, covered 22 acres of now-abandoned land and was home to seven properties.

There are four additional buildings on site with rusting, old old farm equipment, vintage dirt bikes and even a random typewriter left behind.

Kaizer Glick accidentally found the abandoned neighbourhood while exploring the area, coming across what looked like buildings hidden behind some trees.

The trees were eventually removed with the strange properties suddenly exposed to the world after years of going unnoticed.

Kaizer, an urban explorer, later shared the find with his 48,500 YouTube fans.

One fan even claimed to have visited the site and checked public records, said it appeared the first properties were built in 1941 with more added in the 1950s, and the town was sold this past February – though this has not been confirmed.

“I believe it was abandoned to expand a highway or to build a warehouse or apartments,” Kaizer, a 19-year-old independent journalist, from Chicago, said.

"Many locals drove up to us and asked us if we knew [about it] – we were just as confused as they were.

"They told me they didn't even know it existed till the trees were cut down. One part of the neighbourhood looked to be a farm with some big operations going on.

"There was a barn with lots of homemade ceramics left behind along with a tractor garage and a powerhouse or machine building. The rest were homes with most things left behind. There were so many tractors and useful machinery left behind, I even found a vintage dirt bike."

Kaizer's video brought in thousands of views and stunned viewers were quick to comment on what he found.

One wrote: “It's creepy but at the same time just plain sad. Those homes once held people who created memories and dreams. But to just have to leave like that, seemingly only with a few possessions and never come back...that is the creepy part.” [sic]

Another viewer added: “Such a peculiar sight, only in the dead of winter can it be witnessed. Street View only goes to November and even then all of this is so well hidden.”

“Just was there last week, looked like they made ceramic figures judging by all the mold,” said Jeybee.
