Chilling moment prisoner attacks guard after stalking him through jail
Security footage shows the dramatic moment a prisoner almost stabbed a prison guard after lunging at him with a knife, meaning to kill him.
Kevin Jones, 41, has been convicted of attempted murder after he attacked the guard at HMP Bullingdon near Bicester.
The male prison officer, then aged 28, was escorting another prisoner to his cell at around 10.10am on 17 July 2021 when Jones struck, a court head.
Jones had a pre-existing grudge against the officer and CCTV shows him stalking the guard around the Blackthorn Unit looking for his chance to attack.
When prisoner Jones and the guard were both finally on the same landing at the same time, outside the wing office, Jones launched his assault.
Man in 30s dies after being stabbed in park sparking police probeAs the victim walked past him, Jones is seen in the footage pulling a sharpened plastic knife out of his pocket.
Jones then lunged at the officer and swung the weapon at him, attempting to make contact with the victim's neck.
The officer was alert to the danger and managed to avoid the attack and Jones was restrained on the floor by other officers and subsequently moved to segregation.
Jones, now of Broadmoor Hospital, Crowthorne, Berkshire, pleaded guilty to one count each of attempted murder and unauthorised possession in prison of a knife or offensive weapon at Oxford Crown Court. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
In an interview with authorities after the attack Jones told how he had intended to stab and kill the officer with the makeshift weapon he had created.
Following his sentencing, which took place last Thursday (25/05), Investigating officer PC Andrew Gold, of the Prison Crime Team, said: "This was a very serious and unprovoked attack on a prison officer in the course of his duties.
"This is something Thames Valley Police simply will not tolerate and will always seek to bring offenders before the courts.
"Had the victim not been so alert as to the danger he was in and avoid the attack, the outcome could have been very different."
"Fortunately, the victim did not receive any physical injuries but he has suffered mentally, such as stress and anxiety, which has affected both his professional and personal lives.
"I am very pleased that the courts recognised the significant threat posed by Jones, and imposed a substantial custodial sentence."
