Labour MP suspended after 'incredibly serious' allegations about behaviour

A Labour MP has had the party whip suspended following "incredibly serious allegations of completely unacceptable behaviour".

An investigation was launched into Geraint Davies after five female colleagues alleged they were subjected to unwanted sexual advances.

This afternoon a sixth woman is understood to have made a formal complaint to the party about Mr Davies' conduct. He denied the allegations when approached by Politico.

The Swansea West MP has been administratively suspended from the party, which also means having the whip suspended in Westminster.

A Labour spokeswoman said earlier today: "These are incredibly serious allegations of completely unacceptable behaviour.

"We strongly encourage anyone with a complaint to come forward to the Labour Party's investigation.

"Any complainant will have access to an independent support service who provide confidential and independent guidance and advice from external experts throughout the process."

When approached about the claims by Politico, Mr Davies said he did not “recognise” the allegations.

He told the website: “If I have inadvertently caused offence to anyone, then I am naturally sorry.”

The youngest woman to say she was targeted by the Labour MP was just 19 at the time, Politico reports.

On another occasion Mr Davies is claimed to have approached an "extremely intoxicated" 22-year-old, and subsequently sent her a number of "sexually suggestive" messages.

He is alleged to have made a 19-year-old staffer feel “uncomfortable and under pressure” at a party conference, when he is said to have invited her to his hotel room.

One Labour MP told Sky News: "He would openly boast about bringing escorts and prostitutes onto the terrace and show them off."

They claimed that he was spoken to by party officials, but no formal complaints had been made.

A Labour peer claimed Mr Davies could often be seen in the Parliamentary bar with young women, with talk of him "favouring Eastern Europeans".

The unnamed MP said: "He would look you up and down, make lewd comments and touch you around the waist when he came up behind you."

Two MPs said he touched them without their consent, with one saying she felt "deeply uncomfortable" when he pressed his legs against her in a meeting.

She spoke to party whips, it is claimed, but did not make a formal complaint.

Another MP told Politico Mr Davies had put his hand on her waist after a late vote in the Commons, and said: "Glad we can go home now".

And a fifth woman, who used to work in Parliament, said Mr Davies repeatedly made remarks about her appearance and said things like "you smell nice" and “you’re my favorite person to sit next to.”

The Mirror has contacted Mr Davies for comment.
