A three-year-old child was found in his own bed in what is being described as a 'bone chilling' child abuse case.

Shocked authorities found the young boy's lifeless body at his home in Bartow, Florida on May 12.

The baby boy died in a horrific state with gaping wounds and ulcers all over his body, authorities have said.

Takesha Williams, 24, and Efrem Allen Jr, 25 were charged with negligent child abuse causing great harm resulting in the death of the child.

The boy, who has not been identified, had been in a comatose state since 2020 after falling into a pool and drowning while on holiday where the family was staying.

The boy was found with no pulse and was connected to a ventilator.

Firefighters from Bartow Fire Rescue responded to a 911 call from the mother of the boy saying the pulsometer was not working correctly.

He was then transferred to hospital where he was declared dead.

A medical examiner said the child was suffering from sepsis and pneumonia.

After the 2020 incident, the child was taken to hospital with no brain activity and could not even blink, according to reports by Law and Crime.

Doctors recommended he be removed from life support, but the parents chose to bring him home with home health care three times a week, a ventilator and a stomach tube.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said in a news conference: "They let this baby rot and die in its bed.

"I’ve done this for five decades. I have seen thousands of children abused, hundreds of children murdered at the hands of parents.

"I have never seen the horror that we saw with this poor child at the hands of these two folks."

Judd said of the sight that met firefighters: "There appeared to be no life in the child."

Care assistance for the boy was rejected in October after a switch to a different nursing home company and no home health care was given since.

Williams and Allen "would not be home, would not answer the door", according to Judd.

He accused the pair of getting tired of the intensive care needed for the boy, but reports say the parents said they did not call for help because they were worried their other two children, aged two and ten months, would be taken away from them.

They are alleged to have discovered the boy was cold to the touch - the pulse oximeter was also said to be 'malfunctioning'.

In a call to 911, Allen reportedly said: "This is really not an emergency. You don’t need red lights and sirens, but we’d like fire to come over and check the baby."

The other two children are now in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families.

Williams and Allen are in Polk County jail held on a $100,000 bond.
