AMD has announced its new RX 7600 graphics card, and in the process, it has shown Nvidia what mid-range pricing really is.

The launch of AMD's new Radeon RX 7900 XTX and XT late last year was well received, with both featuring top-of-the-line performance at competitive price point when compared to the alternatives from Nvidia. Ever since, consumers have been eagerly awaiting AMD's answer to the "mid-range" cards Nvidia has put out, and that wait is now over following the launch of the RX 7600.

In a YouTube video released by AMD, Scott Herkelman, the SVP of the company, announced the brand-new card and confirmed the pricing and availability. The RX 7600 is available to buy now and will retail for £259.99 / $269.99 which roughly converts to AU$405, but keep in mind this is a straight conversation and doesn't factor in regional pricing.

Herkelman explained that this new card will be more than capable of running AAA titles in 1080p, at a minimum of 60fps at the highest graphics settings, which is frankly the bare minimum we should expect from a 7000 series GPU. He then went on to clarify that that card also has the capability of running games at 1440p, when utilising FSR at least, AMD's performance-boosting software.

The rise and fall of mid-range

For comparison, the recently announced Nvidia RTX 4060 Ti retails for £389 / $399, which roughly converts to AU$747, and was seemingly the death of a true mid-range graphics card option when it comes to pricing. Nvidia has stated that the RTX 4060 line of cards, with other versions releasing over the next few months, are made to run games at 1080p rather than higher resolutions like 1440p or 4K.

Looking back, the Nvidia 30 series lineup that launched a few years ago featured some compelling options, gamers were able to get their hands on mid-range cards such as the RTX 3060 and RTX 3070, and still get back an excellent level of performance for the money. However, the 40 series has so far fell short of the expectations set by its predecessors, with the RTX 4070 Ti launching at £799 / $799 / AU$1479, well above the RTX 3070 Ti's £529 / $599 / AU$1134.

The RX 7600 is the first mid-range graphics card in the new 7000 series lineup from AMD, and considering it's launching at such a competitive price point, we can only hope that this is the revival of affordable mid-range graphics options. Nvidia have dropped the ball this year, maybe it's time to switch to team red.
