Some of the new RX 7900 XTX graphics cards are facing performance and overheating issues, with AMD releasing a statement following these reports.

The latest 7000 series graphics cards from AMD were only released last month, but some people are already facing performance issues and throttling. It has been reported that the RX 7900 XTX GPUs have been overheating up to a pretty intense level, with some claiming that their samples were hitting triple digits in temperature. AMD has now released a statement responding to the claims, admitting that there is a thermal issue which may affects some cards.

"We are working to determine the root cause of the unexpected throttling experienced by some while using the AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX graphics cards made by AMD," Said AMD via Tom's Hardware.

"Based on our observations to date, we believe the issue relates to the thermal solution used in the AMD reference design and appears to be present in a limited number of the cards sold.

"We are committed to solving this issue for impacted cards. Customers experiencing this unexpected throttling should contact AMD Support."

AMD says that the issue is only affecting a limited number of cards, however, there is no indication as to what they mean by this. It could just be a couple hundred of them or it could be half of them, who knows? At least it's not every single GPU, which indicates it can hopefully be resolved quickly.

Since this is a hardware issue, we could see a recall of the faulty units, with replacements sent out in order to fix the issue. If you do have an affected unit, this might mean you're without a GPU for a short while - I guess it's finally time for that break from gaming. The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT isn't affected by these problems, so if you opted for the alternative 7900 series edition, then you're in the clear.

Is this really AMD's fault?

It's worth noting that AMD doesn't actually manufacture the thermal solutions in the graphics card. They have a supplier which is in charge of both producing and quality controlling the final product. This means that to some extent, they were not entirely at fault for the issue occurring in the first place.

However, the company should still be completing its own level of quality control before accepting and shipping the product out to customers. Whether or not the supplier is at fault for manufacturing issues, AMD is still responsible for the performance and quality of the product. These issues should have been caught before the graphics cards were ever sent out to customers.

This coming to light after a lot of people were majorly disappointed with the announcement of the Nvidia RTX 4070 Ti has made it a very tough week to be a PC gamer on the hunt for a new graphics card, like myself.
